How about more plain edges?

Agreed. I would definitely have a Vision if not for the hated serrations.

Amen.F*** serrations.

Hey Guys,

Though here on BFC, there's a number of knife purists who agree with you on desiring plain edged knives...and I can understand that.

I see a couple reasons that support the rationale for the combo edges.
  1. Sales for partially serrated knives are significantly higher than their combo edged counterparts. In some cases, the ratio is stacked so much in the favor of combo edges, that it isn't fiscally responsible to keep the plain edged versions in production.
  2. I believe a significant reason for this that the majority of knife buyers simply don't know how to effectively sharpen knives. Because of this, they believe that the serrations on the combo edge will give them sharpness for a longer period of time without maintenance.
For those "purists," I suggest that you understand that the above stated points are a reality and look for knives you like in plain edges.

An example of this would be sports-oriented cars. Though the only real "sports" transmission is a manual, the car buying public significantly supports the automatic transmissions because they are easier to drive.

Ron, I see your point to an extent. Nonetheless, I think SOG does itself a disservice by not offering its higher-end knives like the Vision in plain-edge. I could be wrong, but I just don't think that the less informed or devoted customers you refer to are going to buy that many $100+ knives.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I really don't know much about the production procedure.
As to my understanding, a combo edged knife is made by grinding on a plain edge to make serrations. So if there are combo edged knives, should plain edged versions be available by just removing that serration procedure?

Serrations are cut deeper than the plain edge portion, so to remove serrations, a notable portion of the blade would need to be ground down.

You may wish to read this thread where more specific information on this topic was discussed.

Ron, the serration topic is a subject that has been discussed many times here on the forums. I too like a straight edge overall, but like to have a little of each if I can. :D My Night Vision is part serrated and comes in very handy when I need to rip through something really tough and do it fast.

Maybe the general public thinks the aggressive looking serrations might help them to do "more" of their cutting needs ? And maybe they figure when buying a knife, if they get two different cutting edges the knife will be more bang for their buck ? Who knows........just some thoughts after reading your other threads. Thanks for your input...... :)

the whole idea of serrations is to be able to cut through things that a plain edge can`t . each edge has its own distinct advantages . i personally love my graphite flash 2 . i`m sure there are people who would agree with me.

Yes, but can't they just put the plain edge Flash blades, which already exist, into a Aluminum handle?

I would love to see a run of PE only Pentagons. Love the feel of the knife but don't like the teeth.

Greetings from Sweden, my forst post here.

I just came back from the local knife store, I realy like the NW Ranger, but I do not like the serations.

The knife has a good balance, good grip, love the Bowie look, classic but with modern materials. Almost everything I could want from a fixed blade, a decent price too. But there are the serations, so unfortunately I will not buy it.

So I would second the call for some more plain edges. Now I understand the need for a company to make decisions about what models to produce depending on sales and market research. So this was my input on the subject.

Come on! I LOVE the flash in Aluminum, but...it's COMBO ONLY! =(

I agree 100%. This was a deal breaker for me. I bought a Twitch 2 instead.

If we could get a running poll, and type of knife/blade etc., I think we could see what they say, it would not hurt to ask.

But we need a specific model of SOG...........Any ideas ?

I will second (third, fourth or whatever) the call for a plain edged aluminum handled Flash II.:)

Yes, that would be a nice knife for a plain edge. I don't fully understand the whole plain edge vs serrated anyway.

According to Ron Andersen, (used to work for SOG) and if I understand it right, many more partial serrated knives sell than do plain edge.......I would have thought at least 50/50...........go figure..........

P.S. Ron, correct me if I am wrong....please....... :D
