Military with S35VN steel? Is Spyderco thinking of using this steel on any knives?

RickJ

This steel seems pretty good so far. I've cut a few branches/small shrubbery (battoned the tang with a 3"x16" log and it is buttery smooth. No chipping, staining, rolled cutting edge. Of course I wasn't swinging for the fences but I was definitely impressed.

I would love to see a new Military model, with full skeletonized steel liners, CPM-M4 or some other awesome steel, a CBL or some other type of lock. Some swirled G-10 clothes would also set it off. It's a great knife and has been, a few upgrades would be well received I think IMO.

You mean other than the just-released Mule MT06? ;)

The only other knife I've seen recently with an S35VN blade is the CRK Nyala, which isn't shipping yet, but I haven't been looking hard. It hasn't been too widely adopted yet, AFAIK.

Is S35VN the steel Chris Reeve is going with now! I thought I read something about it!

There is still some uncertainly as to whether the steel will become full production, aside from the mules. You must have read the tear sheet on the mules, that is what I've seen so far.

Grabbed this from the Spyderco website:

Crucible Steel in NY created CPM-S30V as steel developed specifically to be used for knife blades. A first, and the knife industry appreciates such purpose built efforts.

Shortly after the introduction of CPM-S30V, Chris Reeve (of Chris Reeve Knives) began working with Dick Barber, a metallurgist at Crucible Steel (at the time).

The goal was to create an even better version of the steel that had better machinability and finish. After several years of testing and development, the result was CPM-S35VN. Chemically the same as S30V, but with the additional of Niobium (also referred to as Columbium).

High Chromium ferritic steels containing Niobium exhibit increased temperature stability and refined grain structure which is important when working hard steels used in items like jet and rocket engines, welding and knife blades. It increases a blade’s strength and ability to take and retain sharpness.

Crucible worked with a few makers to test and refine the steel. Production began on CPM-S35VN just before changes were made in the Crucible business model.

At this time, there is still question as to whether this fine steel will be in production. Spyderco was fortunate to be able to grab some while it was still available and this Mule Team model is the result of that opportunity.
CPM-S35VN is exotic in its chemistry, even for powdered steels. This is an opportunity for some to be able to play with this new evolution to blade steel.

It seems that you haven't heard of Knifeworks' special limited run of Millies coming out sometime around May. Titanium/G-10 handle, Reeve Integral Lock (framelock), CPM M4 blade steel. Thems be some pretty swell upgrades and are plenty well received by the lucky ducks who managed to get on the wait list. I know I'm wildly anticipating mine and sincerely appreciate the thought and effort that has gone into those upgrades.:)

I did see it on their site about a month ago. I would have ordered it but money was extra scare around the holidays (for my own stuff anyways). I hope when you receive your, you will post a few pics and give a review on it.

I was thinking more along the lines of a BB lock - framelocks are ok, but like some I've had back luck with them in the past. I just prefer something else. Oh well, I guess we can dream for now, until the new Para 2 comes out.;)

I am pretty sure that there was a subsequent discussion here or at SF between Sal and a senior person from NSM that indicated that S35VN was going to be obtainable in normal quantities through normal channels. I'll see if I can find the link.

Here's the thread I referred to above.

Crucible Industries is still going to make CPM S35-VN. We have over 15,000 pounds on order and some has already arrived. We will have sheet for sale by the first week in February from our warehouse. We also plan to ship material to distributers willing to buy it so they can sell it as well.

I bet lots of folks would be in for a sprint run mili from spyderco in s35-vn or M4, I missed out on the Knifeworks one :(
