What Do You Guys Think Of These Knives? Which One Would You Rely On In The Wilderness And Why? Sorry I Ask Alot Of You Guys But This Place Is Home. Thankx For The Help!!!!

i have both and i'd choose the RD. i have the D2 RAT-7 and it's very good for all around camp chores but it's not hefty enough to be a real chopper. plus 1095 is not the toughest of steels and not the best edge holder. the only good thing is easy field sharpening. the D2 version is not as tough as the RD's 5160 and it's tough to sharpen in the field. holds a good edge though and it's semi-stainless.

really a different kind of knife IMO. the RAT is 3/16" thick and more utility than anything IMO. an all arounder. the RD is 1/4" thick, hefty and a great chopper but can still do the little things if needed. i see the RAT as a new/improved Kabar style knife. not something to make a log house with but good to have around for everything in between. the RD is like the big guns. tough as hell 5160 and a chopping machine. more like a Busse than a kabar.

so if i had to choose 1 i'd choose the RD cuz i feel it's more capable. the RD can do what the RAT does and then some... now only if ontario can make the new RTAK with better steel...

I lke my RAT 7. I think it's a heck of a good knife for the money you pay. I don't think it's made for chopping but it might do pretty well. If you go visit the Randall Adventure and Training site they explain why they use 1095 and reccommend it.

I also like the RAT blade shape better and I think it may slice a little better than the RD.

Don't own a RD but I have heard nothing but good things about them as well.
