How about revisiting the dodo?

Since a wharncliffe SPOT is in the works, how about taking the same blade shape over to the Dodo?

Chris -- I just got a Dodo, and like the reverse S fine, but I thought the exact same thing. It would cut well and be a lot easier to sharpen.

I'm for it!

Same here. I know a while back there was a photoshoped picture of a modified Dodo handle with a Wharnie blade shape. I really really liked it. I'd love to see the Dodo with a more conventional blade shape.

hey, that is what I wrote in the German speaking knifeforum.

we had a passaround with a PE dodo sponsored by spyderco (thanxx a bunch) and this was exactly my observation. I was a little disappointed with its performance, because i was able to outcut the dodo with my CRKT bearclaw (PE).

Sal I was told you are going to get a translated version of those comments or already have them.

since I don't want to leave you other people in the dark, I will summarize my findings:

- blade is too short to allow good use of the blade shape that works so well with the civi

- the belly is too acute so that what you want to cut tends to slip (I think this is not such a big problem with the SE version though)

=> the hook does all the work
=> shortens effective bladelength to a little over 1"
=> the portion of the blade that is the most difficult to sharpen does all the work and therefore dulls quicker

my recommendations were:
-flatgrind
-yojimbo style wharncliffe or hawkbill

it just feels good to have so many likeminded people 'round :D

I'm glad I'm not the only that feels this way then.

Joe Talmadge, I was thinking the same thing.

Ookami, I agree with everything you said. I found the only part of the blade that actually saw any use was the hook portion. If that's the case, why not just use a hawkbill?

Sal, since you're tooling up to make the change to the SPOT, would that make it any easier to make the change on the Dodo?

I agree that the Dodo blade shape/size has its flaws, but it wouldn't be the Dodo without looking like that. Another "little-big" knife with a flat-ground wharncliffe or something like that might be just what we're looking for. Something inspired by the Dodo, the Yojimbo, and some new ideas could make an awesome knife! Sometimes I feel sorry for Mr. Glesser, dealing with every idea that we come up with, hehe. He should just invite all the forumites to the Golden facility for a day and see what we come up with.

If Spyderco made a Dodo with a Wharncliffe blade I'd order it today.

Jedi's idea of a new design combining elements of the Yojimbo and Dodo is interesting. I'd be interested as long as the blade is less than 2 and 1/2".

I would like the dodo if the tail on the end of the scales was removed and a 3 screw clip put on and the ball in the lock changed to an oval so it would be easier for my large fingers to work the lock.

Don't feel bad -- I'm sure it's pretty much like "money in the bank" for him... :p

Your idea is a good one. The stuff we could come up with...

I know the wharncliffe is kind of a big deal right now, but if we do change it, I'd like it to retain at least some of its original character. I really like the hawkbill part of this knife. I think the bump in the reverse s would be more useful if it had more blade on the other side...that way we could saw with cardboard jumping onto the tang.

Basically, I'll be interested, but only if it's not a wharncliffe. They're probably my least favorite blade shape.

If they keep the same handle, pack MORE blade into it ! So many call it a 'small" knife yet the thing is longer, wider and heavier then my delica , the only thing small is the blade. Since most folks don't live or work under 2 inch blade limits they can carry a 3 inch knife in the same space......

I thought that was part of the design reason. A short blade (large enough for most tasks) with a handfilling handle.

Usually, I really hate sub-3.5 inch bladed knives. Why? Can't grip the things enough for positive control, insufficient contact with hand for applying force during "tough" cuts, etc.

The Dodo's blade to handle ratio probably made it undesireable to many. "Gotta have the maximum length blade the handle will contain" expectation.

Yet, when we look at slip-joints, we see a multitude of shorter-blades-than-the-handle configurations.

The solution is for Spyderco to SELL VARIOUS BLADES THAT EACH WILL FIT INTO THE SAME HANDLE.

What, like you wouldn't buy a few for one knife? I sure as hell would!
