How about some carbon steel Westerns?

I was just taking a good look at the Western product line, and I really like a lot of those designs. Although there is nothing wrong with 420 at this price point, these knives would be infinately more appealing if they were made of a plain old carbon steel like 1095.

Plus it would fit better with the generally old fashioned look of the products.

Are ther any plans for something like this?

I agree with fishbulb. Some carbon steel Westerns would be a fine addition to your product line.

As an aside, I have a Western camp knife from the late 80's or early 90's. The jigged Delrin is very hard to tell from real jigged bone. It's so well done that you have to look closely and feel the scales. I'd love to see this Delrin pattern used on some of the newer made Camillus slipjoints. It's much nicer and more authentic looking than the current Delrin offerings.

As far as carbon steel goes, I agree wholeheartedly. I'm always on the lookout for simple carbon steel slipjoints, but with natural handle materials. Stag, bone, wood... I love them all. I very much prefer 1095 on my slipjoints than stainless. While the Camillus stainless slipjoint steel is acceptable, it just doesn't compare to something like 1095. The carbon steel is in a whole different league to us whittlers. The Western Texas Ranger short stockman with 1095 might be my idea of the ultimate pocketknife. I could just buy a few of them, and live happily for the rest of my life.

Either Camillus or Schrade has to do the right thing sooner or later, and give us a natural handled slipjoint in 1095.

Guys,
Were were you when I needed you! We have had the WESTERN knives in carbon steel....

WW49
WW36

We all availible in 1095 carbon up until a few years ago....and sales on those models did not justify keeping them in the line  Personally, I like carbon steel in almost all of my fixedblades....I hated to see the carbon WESTERN's go...but they had to.

Buzz,
you know we currently make the CAMILLUS CARBON SERIES folders....1095 carbon with Delrin scales. Sorry, they aren't on the website, but here is a pic from the www.1sks.com site...

we have a trapper[shown], a stockman, and a gent's single blade lockback. I hope this helps:)

Give me a break. Even my wife can tell that handle is Delrin. I'm looking for natural handle materials, as I believe many people are. At least something more convincing than stagalon!!! I tell you, those old Western jigged bone camp knives had very convincing jigged delrin.

How hard would it be to grab a few of those carbon steel blades from the Carbon Series, and throw them into the Western wood stockmans? "Oops!!! 100 stockmans were accidentally made with carbon steel blades!!! Gasp!!! This could mean my job!!! I guess I'll have to put them up on CRKnives as a special item, and pray that they sell." :D

Yet another question..... About those celluloid carbon steel stockmans. Are they real celluloid, with the same long term drawbacks as the old stuff? Or are they more like delrin in terms of durability? I've actually held off from buying one, just because I was worried about the aging issues.

Will, I didn't know! That was before my knife interest got out of control! How would a 1095 WW-49 be identified? I plan to start looking for one right away.

Say Will, there might there be some leftover stock in 1095 gathering dust somewhere's?

One way to tell the difference between the carbon and the stainless version is that the carbon has a shiney or mirror polish whareas the stainless has a satin finish.

Although Cheryl isn't around anymore, she does know her knives. Probably has handled more than any of us guys. If she said it, I'd believe it.
