hey all, Newbie here. just started looking for a good sharpener and found the Edge Pro and just wondering who else has one, how good it is, ect. The Pro ver. the Apex. i know, i know use the search. i have a little bit but i have time restraints being here in Kuwait. don't mind spending the money on this system if it is good as everyone says it is. thanks in advance and love the site so far!! :D

I have an edgepro pro model and it is great. Its especially good for large straight blades like kitchen knives and axes etc. Its great at giving a uniform push cut action. If you have smaller knives or multi recurve knives the sharpmaker is a better package. You would probably be doing yourself a favor to learn on a benchstone since they will pretty much sharpen anything. With a couple decent sized bench stones and a file set you'd be pretty well covered for everything.

The Edge Pro Apex is great. Easy to use and works well for all shapes and sizes. If I were getting my first sharpener I'd go with a Spyderco Sharpmaker for about $40. This can sharpen plain and serrated and has good instructions.

The downside with the Edge Pro is that you have to soak the stones and that is somewhat messy. I usually give them about three flushes and I'm ready to go so to speak. They can sharpen almost any angle you can imagine.

I still use a strop/hone for the final couple of passes on the edge to be sure the BURR is gone.

Here is a link that shows the Apex in actual use. Click on the demo part.

Yeah I forgot to mention that a good strop is worth its weight in gold. There are some instructions here somewhere on how to season and apply grit to a strop here. Its almost as important as the stones are for the super razor sharp hair popping edge.

thanks for the replys. my wife also just purchased me the book the Razor Edge book of sharpening and hope to get some good info there as soon as i get it. i also have the sharpmaker now and have a hard time with the angles. so you would recommend getting a strop to go with the Pro? i am hoping to learn to sharpen well enough to start doing it for people over here. any other info about strops and the pro would be greatly appreciated. my wife is going to order the pro with the hard case today. a bit pricey but if it's built to last, it's worth it. thanks again!

I think you will soon discover that most of us who have the Edgepro, Apex for me, have purchased and experimented with every other type of sharpener available. I threw most of it out but kept the Lansky and Sharpmaker, then I bought the Apex and understood.

Take advice from someone who has tried it all (well, lots of it anyway). Nothing compares to the EdgePro for consistency and results. But, I also favor the SharpMaker for quick touch-ups.

I use the E/P when I want that double-bad-ass-atom-splitting edge, and I use the S/M for regular touch-ups.

Once you get the hang of it, you'll give your wife an extra long hug (or whatever). As Ted mentioned, most of us who own the Edge Pro have sometime during our lives bought and tried every gizmo (some quite expensive) touted as sharpeners. Most have gone to the landfills or garage sales as NOTHING compares to the Edge Pro.

I recently gave my Apex to my oldest son and purchased the PRO model. Don't know why, but I'll rationalize it as a "Gifting Father" and I can now sharpen scissors.

You will not be disappointed and it is indeed a lifetime machine. Plus, if you run into problems, fire off a post here. You can also call Edge Pro, and Sierra or Ben (the inventor and owner) will patiently answer all of your questions.

BTW, Welcome to BF amd as a new sharpener...check the "Toolshed" often.

Thank you very much for the advice. i can't wait to get my sharpener and get my spydie Persian back in shape! i do have a slight nick near the tip of the blade and hope that i can work most of it out. :D

Just make sure that you watch the video a couple of times prior so that you know what you are doing. Secondly, before you start on your Persian (an excellent knife....I have 2 plus a mini) I would practice on some beaters first.

Good advice. I found the learning curve very short in producing a very sharp edge but acknowledge that there is a lot to learn in the whole edge ideology, bi-bevels etc. The EdgePro is known to cause scratches on your blade so either wash down very well or cover your knife in painters tape if you have a special knife where it matters.

make sure you get the scissor attachment, sharp scissors good. buy xtra
120&180 grit stones ,4&2, 'cause they wear the fastest. buy the stone only
at $7. ea., then buy the glue at the hardware,3m #77 spray ,i think.
the travel case( hard) is great.
buy the best, cry once!!!
good luck

You're a newbie? I'm sorry, but you're not allowed to get an Edge Pro. You're only allowed to get an Edge Pro when, like the rest of us, you spend years and years struggling to learn to sharpen freehand, and spend mega-$$$$ on every silly sharpening device known to mankind. Only then can you fully appreciate the beauty and performance of the Edge-Pro! :D

Seriously, Edge Pro is the greatest - wish I'd had one years ago! It's the best!

well, my wonderful wife ordered the pro kit 2 with hard case for me! bless her heart! now i just have to play the waiting game since i am in kuwait. i am glad to hear that everyone says it's the best thing out there. another quick question, is it best to soak the stones or apply water while in use? i can't wait to get my sharpener! :D

Bless her heart indeed. I have the Apex and have taken advise from people here to soak the stones. You still have to wash them down to rinse away the metal fines but it works much better knowing the stones are really wet. I keep mine in a gladware container. I used filtered water to reduce the chance of developing mineral deposits on the metal blanks. I would suggest changing the water often so no mold develops as well although a drop or two of bleach could take care of that.

You're in Kuwait? You should have gotten oil stones....

Soaking is not necessary, I initially didn't think that it was needed at all, but it does seem to prevent the stones from loading up... particularly the finer stones. So if you can... soak 'em for at least 10 min. before use.
