I just finished welding , forging and heat treating this blade, got it all cleaned up and etched and now its ready for finishing. What do you all think about this pattern, I made it from a piece of 1095 cable and some 15n20.

Thanks
Bill

I like that pattern! The contrasts are real dramatic. Where the pattern tightens up behind the plunge line - was that deliberate? ...because I think the change enhances the blade.

Great pattern how did you get the dept of etch. I have made a few cable billets but they never seem to get a deep etch or contrast.
I have used copper sulphate, and other times hydrocloric acid.
Never looked as good as yours.

that is what i would call BOLD pattern damascus. i love it. as mentioned i lie how the patern tightens at the ricasso.

Wow, that is spectacular! How exactly did you lay the billet up in order to mix the 15n20 with the cable?

Bill that's a great pattern! Looks more like chain than wire rope, I sure like the big wild parts. I'm with the rest of these guys I want to see the finished product too.

Now that is Perdyyyyyyy...
I need to play in the forge more.Seems like I don't get to play as much as I used to anymore.I am going to have to try something cool like this again.
Bill that is just a radical looking pattern.Great work..
Have you got your Power hammer set up yet?
Bruce

Looking good. Dan Gary and myself are doing a collaberation knife for NECKA that I did a similar trick with cable. I put 15n20 and nickel in the billet.

REG,
My acid mix is 1 part ferric acid to 5 parts water, I place the blade in the acid for 10 min. take it out lite sand with 2000 grit sand paper and replace back in the acid, I do this every 10 minutes until I acheve the depth and boldness I want. This blade took 4 - 10 minute dips.

Bruce,
Yeah, hammers up and running, it sure is a handy piece of equipment. Press is the next thing on my want list, actually it was the first but this hammer was such a bargin I couldn't pass it up.

Thanks Guys for all the great comments, I'll finish this one up in the next couple of days and post another pic. I forge welded a piece of cable and 52100 yesterday, I need to get to the shop and see how its going to come out. :D

Thanks
Bill

Now THAT is some kind of beautiful Bill, To heck with stock removal, I'm taking the plunge(no pun) as soon as possible to heat and beat. I cant wait to see the end result. That deserves some serious thought as to what hardware would be deserving of living next to that piece of art.

nice pattern Mr. Bill:D

Sylvester, nobody argues with a man with a hammer in his hand:D

I always get up real earlier Sat. morning so I won't bother the neighbors when they get up.

Seems like they keep getting up earlier and earlier.
I think they need a hobby, they usually are yellin and screamin when they wake up:D
