what about using a food vacuum packer. put some wood hardener/stabilizer in it, add the slabs, vaccum pack and let sit. dont know if it would be worth it, but it seems that it would work better than just putting slabs in a jar with the hardener.

may not fully penetrate and stabilize, but it would be better than nothing i would think...

just a though that occured to me last night.

There's a lot of people using them, just not the bags but with jars.
The foodsaver bags have to contain only dry stuff. Liquid gets drawn up into the unit long before it establishes any vacuum. You can use a mason jar attachment and draw a vacuum in that, seal it and it works fairly decent. I use half gallon wide mouth jars since it holds big chunks.

go to the grocery store and buy a big jar of picked eggs or sausage, and a 12 pack of beer. Eat, drink, be merry, and save the jar. :)

George, Check Goodwill, SA, or other thrift stores and you should be able to find one or two. They take the normal size lids but if you can get the wide mouth they are alot easier to use. Think the last one my wife got me was 99c.

I had bought a set of cheep leather punches from Harbor Freight and used the 1/2" punch to make the hole in the lid and also used it to make the rubber washers that I used to seal the fittings.

I have looked in all the grocery stores around here with no luck.
But the Pickled eggs, with my heat treat relish, mustard and celery salt with a case of beer sounds alot better. After that I will not need any propane for my forges for a week.
I just use the widemouth cover without any holes in them. I pull the vacuum thru the Foodsaver attachment for wide mouth jar and it works great on the jars for my heat treating relish.

I use the same set up. As a matter of fact, I got the tip from George. I works great! Still gotta try the relish though.

So your making your own natural gas. I've been known to produce my own high octane, need to come up with a way to give it more pressure. Maybe the pickled eggs are the missing ingrediant...... It wasn't me, must have been the dog.....

Indian George,
I pick a box up at two different stores so they can be found but I think both are regional to the midwest, Mills Fleet Farm and Home Of Economy. The big chain stores usually don't carry them. These are Mason brand jars just like found most every where.
