I see allot of talk about a having a staff or cane on the trail to aid with walking.

Would this be a good idea? I though doubling up as a weapon for wild critters is a cool feature.

Not legal in Michigan.

Check your local regulations before buying.

I have no training with swords and would probably end up cutting off my own leg while using it in close quarters with a nasty critter.

in my experience, a staff would be much better for crossings and such.

zip-tie a knife to the end of it if you need something long and pokey in a hurry.

if you decide to go with the sword cane, my humble advice is to wrap it with line to protect you from the cold, if that is a factor.
