Who's been happily surprised by some El'Cheapo?

One of my favorite knives is my cheapest($50).
Its a SS handled Spyderco Dragonfly with a plain edge ATS-55 blade.
Yea, its kinda small but thats part of its charm... it doesnt spook anyone.
It has an EXCELLENT pocket clip.
It holds a great edge and is easy to sharpen.
The handle is "refinishable" with sandpaper, so after 5 minutes of work it looks brand new.
Its just plain bullet proof.

Cold Steel Voyager folders. I got a 4" plain clip point a few months ago for $52 that has totally amazed me. I love the blade on this thing! The zytel handle felt cheap at first, maybe because it is so light, but I'm used to it now and it feels very solid. Good lock, servicable steel. Sharpens easily on my old model sharpmaker. Very good bang for the buck. Is usually now my daily carry, while more expensive knives sit home on the dresser.

I'd have to go with Eric and say my CRKT wharncliffe mirage.
I've battled numerous boxes, reinforced tape and vicious (or is it viscous) pizza slices & it is going strong...sharp, nicely finished and a great bargain (Thanx again Mike

Oh, and it doesn't raise an eyebrow @ the job

Cold steel SRK. I know it's popular, but nowhere near as much as it could/should be. Also the M-16's by CRKT.

I too have an M16-03 and have found it to have a great AUS-8 blade that holds a very sharp edge for a very long time... usually about twice as long as my BM's.
However, the lock on mine is wearing too rapidly...

Gerber EZ-Out. No fanfare, you never hear about it, it just hangs around and performs solidly for the 20-some-odd bucks you shelled out for it.

I can't really say it's underpriced, cuz I think alot of factory knives are overpriced, most of them, to be honest. But it is certainly underrated.

I believe most zytel-handled knives by "name" makers are underrated. Personally, I like the light weight, durability, and the tactile feel that can be molded in like a Gerber AF Covert, Spyederco Native, or AG Russell one-hand knife.

Speaking of which, I'm surprised AG Russell doesn't get a little more press. I like my zytel one-hander alot -- I'm carrying it today in fact.

I'd definitely agree anything by CRKT. I bought one of the M-16's for my nephew, what a knife! It doesn't just look good, it's well built and takes his abuse.

I believe the CRK&T S-2 is very under-rated. It is a quality piece. It doesn't get much attention, but should.

I think any list of underrated knives should include the Benchmade Ascent and the Spyderco Endura and Delica. These knives have good steel, good design and good quality at an affordable price. Take care.

Dashunde,

My first purchase as an addict was a CRKT Gray Ghost (small, plain edge). For me, it's a "gentlemen's" carry and has not been abused and really used. But, I like the styling, fit, feel and value. I carry it most days ISWB for disrete concealment. Good luck!

My vote is for the Spyderco Wayne Goddard lightweight. It is a lot of knife for the money and tougher than a hammer.

Velitrius, I gotta second you on the Gerber EZ-Out. I picked one up for $15 on eBay. It feels good in the hand, the blade is solid, and it performs dirty functions (cutting heavy plastic) I wouldn't use a more expensive knife on.

Opinel knives. Gotta be the kuttentest best bang for the buck out there. They are not nuclear tough but they are easy to sharpen and a real pleasure to cut with. What I consider a totally fun knife. Their locking system is totally cool. They've been around an awfully long time and you can see why.

Between them and sebenzas, I don't know which are the most underrated.

Hoodoo

The low, hoarse purr of the whirling stone—the light-press’d blade,
Diffusing, dropping, sideways-darting, in tiny showers of gold,
Sparkles from the wheel.

Bang for the buck, it's hard to beat a Buck. I.e. Buck 110 or Odyssey.

No brag, just fact : How many Buck 110s are out there that have been just doing their thing for decades? How much does a new 110 cost?

It's not my favorite knife or even my everyday carry, but bang for the buck ... it's hard to beat a Buck.

I think the Cold Steel Master Hunter with its Carbon V steel is a good "bang for the buck" pick. A very capable fixed blade knife that comes very sharp out of the box.

Al Mars in general and their Zytel versions in general. Zytel folders are vastly under rated. I use a Spydie Endura and an Al Mar Sportsman and use them hard. My Sportsman is the sharpest out of the box production folder I have EVER put my hands on. Makes most popular brands (including BM & Spyderco, sorry Les & Sal) seem down right dull... I just hope the soon to come Al Mar SERE 2000 is as good. Maybe its tactical image can open the eyes of some desk-top commandos.

That would be my Spyderco Native with 440V steel blade. It is a fairly small knife, but for about $45 it can't be beat. Great edge-holding, and, so far, bulletproof.
