i got it as a departing gift from where i was working, but i dont really know much about knives, the last one i used was a 5 dollar knife from some gift shop. just wondering how good they are for general cutting, maybe self defense? and quality wise are they at least decent? BTW did some research and it comes with carson flippers, lawks system and aus 8 blade.

I believe you have the model with the 4" blade. A very decent knife, especially as an intro into the world of knives. You are fortunate that you got one of the models with AUS-8A instead AUS-6. AUS-8 is a very good "working" steel that will takes a fine edge and hold it longer than then most of the cheaper knives that people buy (440A steel, in most cases).

While a flipper is not needed nor wanted on most knives, I love it on this one. It's a perfect addition. The LAWKS locking system makes it almost as safe as a fixed blade so remember to use it if your work gets serious. I have a 3 M18's (similar style) and 2 M16's. I always take one of the large models (4") camping as my "knock around" knife. I also often have one in my pocket while working around the house or doing yardwork on the weekends.

Because of it's blade size and shape (I prefer the spear point), partial serrations, "flipper" opening (easy opening even with work gloves on), AUS-8 steel (good medium grade working steel), a good grip, (holes in handle), easy cleaning (handle spine is open), safey locking feature (the LAWKS), and the cost (less than $50), this knife is one of the great deals to be had for a REAL work and camp knife. Also a great self defense piece too.

My collection is quite large and I have dozens of more expensive knives but the CRKT "M" series in AUS-8 and spear point is, in my opinion, one of the best "work horses" on the market today. And since you got yours for free, you have a double winner.

Since I took the time to write all this crap down, just do me one favor. Don't stick this knife on a table and only play with it while watching TV. Use the SOB until you wear it out. Since you got it for free, spend a little money and buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker (off Ebay or most any Internet knife dealer). This will keep all your knives sharp and can also sharpen the serrations. Cut up boxes, cut flowers for your partner, trim some branches and cut weeds. prepare food while on a camping trip, make some tent pegs, open a letter, defend yourself (a great self defense knife), etc. etc.. Then after a few months, ask youself "how did I get by all this time without a good work knife"? The invention of the sharp edge is right up there with fire and the wheel.

Use it and enjoy it. Maybe it will be the beginning of a very expensive but quite satisfying hobby.

Regards (I think I've had too much coffee)

Welcome to BF.
CRKT makes decent quality , low to mid priced knives, mostly folders.
The knife you scored is a good knife. This of course is just my opinion and opinions on here will vary greatly , most of the time :)
If this is your first knife though , it could be a frustrating adventure for you with both a Tanto point and partially serrated edge (both of which can prove difficult to sharpen).
Good luck and post back if you have further questions.
