How are knife blades measured?

When the length of a knife blade is provided for a custom knife, is there a consistent method of measurement? Is is measured along the curve of the blade or is it measured from the guard/handle to the tip? I'm not interested in legalities, just what most people use for measurement. Thanks.

All the knife people I know measure from guard/handle to tip of blade. These folk include makers and users. I'm sure there are fans of the "actual edge" measure, but I don't know any.

Great first question. The previous poster I think had it right on. With respect to "lawful carry" some jurisdictions refer to the "sharpened edge".

If you have an issue with this, just call the custom maker and he will be glad to explain his policy.

Inches here in the US, centimeters almost everywhere else... sorry... welcome. In Colorado, we LEOs measure from the bolster or guard to the tip.

Good question. Sometimes we have to ask. I have seen the measurement taken from the guard, the riccaso, and along the edge. If, not stated otherwise, just assume that they are measuring from the guard.

Copfish,

How long can blades be by that liberal measurement before the jack boots come down on you?
