How are scales held in place in traditional knives?

When you look at a knife like this and see how it's made you realise that the scales are held by pins that get peened then all ground flush to the wood/horn scales. Doesn't sound as if there is any real grip for the pins on the scales

What am I missing here? How come the scales do not fall out when subjected to usage pressure?

Thanks

If they are peined properly, the pins will mushroom a bit - this should be sufficient to hold it in place...

They are usually epoxied to the liners as well and the pins are either really tight, or pressed so they expand then ground flush. There is a video on the Case knife web sight that shows the process well.
