How are you getting your knives to Atlanta?

I am wondering about the best way to get my knives to the Blade Show. Is it OK to put them in the "checked baggage" or should I Fed X them directly to the show address? What are you guys going to do?

Even Checked baggage is subject to full inspection, I would suggest mailing them to yourself or to someone in the area. Supposedly been lots of problems with TSA employees stealing knives and similar things while "inspecting". And these were just benchmades, spydercos and Microtechs. With some of work y'all do, I sure as heck wouldn't trust them to TSA.

Just my .02. i'm gonna be stuck here in OKC while y'all have fun. :)

I'm taking mine carry-on of course ;)

I would NOT put them in checked baggage Bruce. Les Robertson has a thread on his forum explaining his successful transport of knives in checked baggage. Personally, however, I've heard too many stories and seen too many hidden camera videos showing air-line employees sorting and keeping what they like.

Especially considering you are taking 5 MASTER-SMITH TEST KNIVES!!!

Last year Scott Taylor and his wife DROVE from California to Georgia with his MS test knives so as to assure their safe arrival.

I'm sending mine to a trusted friend in Georgia via mail...probably Fed-Ex and picking them up at the show. Last year I sent them to myself at the hotel which worked out fine...except they charged me something like $15 for a handling fee. AND, they didn't open the office until 10:30, so that's obviously after the show starts. If you got them there Thursday morning you'd be okay.

Looking foward to harassing you and shaking your hand once it's deemed a Mastersmith hand :)

Nick I truly hope it will be a Master Smith hand next time you shake it. Im a nervous wreck. I still have 2 knives to make by then and I have design block. I cant think of what I want to make. I wonder if they would mind if I do a couple Loveless Hunters with ATS 34?

I think I should call the Hotel and make arrangments to mail them to myself. The judging is Friday morning so I need them on Thursday for sure.

See Ya There

My wife and I just went through this on the way 'to and fro' the Eugene, OR. (OKCA) show...coming from separate cities on the way there.

Following the advice from Les' post (or maybe it was something posted by John Hollister), we got to the airport(s) a little early, and asked that our baggage be hand checked and sealed by the TSA staff while we watched...

The process went something like this...

After receiving our boarding passes, we followed the airline agent over to the OCS (I dunno what that stands for, but that's what 'they' called it), where we were introduced to the TSA inspector.

We declared 'high dollar items', specifically 'collectible' knives, in sheaths (If yours aren't sheathed, let the TSA inspectors know before hand)...

In my case, the bags were opened and hand checked, then run through a large x-ray machine for examination. Upon exit from the machine, the bags were tagged by TSA, and zip tied closed. In my wife's case, the bags were x-ray'ed first, then hand checked, then tagged and zip tied closed.

The whole process on both ends took less than 10 minutes, and provided us with great piece of mind. All in all, it was a very painless and professional process. YMMV

Hope that helps,

Mel

I'm sending some to a dealer friend and he's putting them on his
table so I can just run around and have a good time:D
I know I'm cheating a little.:D
I'll see about a table next year..:)
WOW I didn't think you'd be able to carry any knives on a plane?
