How bad is salt water?

I want to take a Rescue Jr on a sailing vacation. It would be clipped in my bathing suit pocket at all times(even while swimming). With no care (i.e. oiling regularly after submerged in sea water), what type of effects would I see in a weeks time? Could I still trust it to perform on day seven. It would be nice to clip to my suit and not worry about having to oil it. If an absolute recommendation, I will pack a small bottle of oil, but I need to bring as little as possible. I am really curious what is the least amount of maintenance I will have to perform. Maybe just a rinsing and drying would work. I would appreciate all feedback. Thankyou.

I wouldn't like to give it a full week with heavy salt water exposure without some maintanence. In just a week it shouldn't damage it seriously, but I would expect some surface rust.

If you need to travel light I would recommend a Marine Tuf-Cloth from .Sentry Solutions
A wipe or two a day should keep your knife in good order

Very bad!
Marine Tuf-Cloth is good thing but it can be applied on the blade and big exposed parts only (since it is the napkin soaked with chemical dry-film-making preparation you should wipe your metal things with). In fact there is no possibility to apply it onto knife covered parts, for example pins, inside part of locking bar and it’s spring etc.
My advice would be: rinse your knife in fresh water immediately after each immersing, then make it dry (compressed air blasting would be the best) and next blast with spray solvent-lubricant like WD-40 or something similar.

Edited to correct some spelling.

Your spydie will take all the salt water you can throw at it and laugh. I'd recomend you run it under fresh water at the end of the day, but it that's not possible, don't worry about it. I carried my Endura clipped to the top of my bib's for a year on three different boats in Alaska. I did spray some silicone on it every now and then, but this wasen't really necessary, just some fresh water. My Spydie thrived on the saltwater diet:D I'm sure your's will too. Just give her a bath every night.

Surely you don't mean 7 days W/O any care?
This sounds redundant but atleast! rinse it in fresh water after swimming or exposure to sea water.
Your problem will come from places like screw threads rusting or piviot pin 1st, before you see actual rust on the outside.
I normally swim with my knives also.
#1 sharks- I might can't kill em but i can sure make em feel bad.
#2 and i know some of you are gonna say yea right! catfish, where i live 100 lbs isn't considered big.
Just give your Rescue a quick bath after swimming and if nothing else is avalible use plain ole cooking oil. Ron

Rinse your knife regularly and it will be fine for a week. When you get home put it in the dishwaher for a couple of cycles or soak it and dry it a few times to get out any worked in salt. Don't worry about your knife, just have a great time on your trip.

Thanks for all the replys. I plan to buy one of these knives for myself and two others going. There is a fourth person going but I think we would all be in danger if she has a sharp implement. She tends to be very clumsy.

I think we'll be safe carrying these in the BVI. The law there supports carry of knives with a working purpose. Whatever?!

I recently spent a week in Hawaii with a Blue Delica VG10, tuf-cloth actually removed a dark spot on the edge of the knife, and cooking oil did a fine job of keeping the action clean. The knife was playesd with constantly in and out of the water and was carried IWB in the water and clipped in the waist while running, and then in soggy shorts all day (it is the tropics after all)

Wash it off and you will be fine. Drying it off is a nice luxury, but remember that people have carried knives for centuries without WD40, compressed air, all the other cool new stuff that did not exist in the dark ages. wash with clean water, shake it out, let it dry if you can, and if nothing else a little local vegetable oil will keep you working right.

Pack your sunscreen and the cooler too!

I'm not sure what saltwater will do to your blade but that's one of the great things about spyderco knifes... they are FRN bolted together knives this make them in expensive and therefore expendable if you knife gets all craped up just go buy another. It will definatly last at least a week even it doesn't look pretty after.
