I'm want to pick up a plasma cutter. Nothing big. Maybe up to 3/8" or 1/2". I have used them at work before but never bought my own. How big of compressor for small stuff like knifes. I have a very small shop so space is a bigger deal than cost.

I have never hooked my plasma cutter up to my big compressor. I always use the little one, which, I believe, goes about 5 CFM. The duty cycle for small stuff is nothing, as I'm sure you know. The compressor has lots of time to build up pressure between cuts.

Find a plasma cutter

Read the manual
I had planned to buy the compressor for a kitchen remodel first.

I didn't say buy it, I said find it.

Figure out the one you want, probably based on thickness and duty cycle
How thick of a material do you want, and how hard do you want to work it.

Download the manual and read it.

Some tiny plasma cutters even have a little compressor built in

1/2" is actually pretty thick

Are pro quality machines
Hypertherm is made in USA, company owned by employees.
They are also priced as pro quality tools.

Lincoln seems ok for consumer-prosumer plasma
They are great about putting info on line.

If you plan to use the compressor for other things, read the specs on SCFM of those tools and make sure you go bigger than the tool.

Horsepower and tank size are meaningless, manufacturers fiddle with the HP ratings. Tanks are cheap compared to pump size and actual motor size.

My plasma cutter doesn't use much air.

My old miller ran on 120v and had its own compressor. Would not do 1/2 inch but cut kegs like butter

My experience has been in boat yards. We had lots of problems with our air supplies. Of course the fact that some of the guys replaced one of the air filters with a role off toilet paper might be part of the problem. LOL.

I am planning on something around 65 amps though that Miller than is auto switching to 120 seems convenient.
