How 'bout pics of a stripped (CG) FBM?

I know it is soon to ask! I'm eventually going to get around to it after I beat the crap out of mine. I have a good idea what it will look like from stripping my AK, but was hoping someone else already has stripped a FBM and can post some pics. I may not ever grind the corrugations off my AK, but when I got two CG FBM's my plan has always been to strip it, sand the corrugations off, and give it a satin finish (on the primary bevel leaving dimples on the flats) - I was hoping someone had some pics of one stripped to pump me up.

If no one posts, I will when I get the urge and do it (I'll have to beat mine some more first).

Here's the AK just to give ya something to look at....

do you compete?

After using it I finally scrubbed it with a little soap yesterday and it still looks so nice I would be embarrassed to enter it yet. Maybe by the time the contest ends it'll be beat up enough.

Lookin' good 360J!

Do you guys have any more pics of those stripped AK's? I'd like to see them at some different angles -- it's hard to even see the dimples on those pics. Troy, yours looks almost like a double cut urban camo!

Those stripped AK's look nice. I don't want to be a wet blanket, but:

Not long after the AK's were first announced, Jerry posted a message recommending that the AK's not be stripped. If I remember correctly, his concern was that on the long, relatively thin blade, the difference in surface tension or pressure on each side of the blade if they were stripped one side at a time could warp the blade. I don't remember if it is a warranty killer or not.

It looks like those pictured had no problems, just sayin'.

Hi Mike,

I do remember that discussion and I couldn't remember the particulars of it when I stripped my AK. I just remembered that I needed to be careful while doing it. I stripped mine with a chemical stripper and did both sides at the same time -- this method seemed to work fine.

Regarding the warranty, I'm not sure about this either. At any rate, I don't think it'll ever get to that point. I treat my AK like a queen.

Xaman,

I seem to remember an earlier thread that Broos posted right after he stripped his AK that had GREAT pictures of the steel surface. Oh, ...here it is.... I'm not sure if the beveling is really shown well in that picture though. The flash seems to have over-exaggerated the steel work in that area.

After stripping my AK, I'd waste no time in deciding to strip an FBM. I hope to get one at some point, but I may have to wait until Skunk gets them in. ;)

:D :D

I think Jerry's concern was for putting a satin finish on the AK as the small amount of INFI removal on either side of the blade during that process could weaken that side and cause warping.

My AK does have some uneveness in the grind, especially towards the tip - I'm not worried about this, but I also am not worried about the affects of taking off the coating. I have cut down a number of trees, chopped tree stumps, lumber, paperbacks, some copper wire, phone books, and threw it some with no ill affects yet. Still haven't attacked metal like David Brown did, though (tin cans don't count) - that was cool. I'm a lot more worried about accidentally chopping my leg off than the sword failing!

Dang it! I know better than to keep scrolling down in a post like that

Looks like that might hurt more than getting hit w/the AK :D
