How To How can I dye some Case knives a deeper, better blue?

I just received three Case stockman knives. They are lovely but two jigged bone knives are not well dyed and one scale on a smooth bone side is less dyed than the other scale.

I thought I could give it a try dying them all.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Also, does anyone know if the dye will sink into the bone scales or if the Case knives are sealed somehow?

Thanks for all your help (yet again) and I wish y'all a wonderful Thanksgiving (after the fact), Christmas, Hanukkah, and so on.

This has been discussed on multiple threads on the Traditionals subforum, with directions and examples and whatnot from different people who've done this. Do a search there for discussions on this. (I'm on my phone, so searching a bunch of threads and listing them here is a little awkward.)

Here's an image.

I would like them to look as much like the smooth one at the bottom as possible.

I'll look for those threads. I hadn't seen one specifically about Case, though. I am wondering if there is some kind of sealant on them that would cause dying to turn out funny.

Thats the nature of dyeing bone. Ya almost never get it absolutely uniform. But thats the cool part of personal preference too. I'd much rather have the upper two than the bottom one. But again thats really just bone.

Traditionals is the section to ask this though like Tyson mentioned. Those guys even change colors. I think most use Rit dye.

I'm a Big Fan of "Green Pickle Bone":D

When I've dyed Case Bone I always wipe it down with alcohol couple time to remove ANY oils. I've used Rit Dye and "Fiebings" Leather Dye. I like the leather dye because I can control the amount of soak time without the heat. I've never done a BLUE Dye, but Fiebings offers Blue dye.

bone can have different densities and calcium deposits which will give different absorption of dye.

I've never died bone so take this with a grain of salt but what about an alcohol Dye in a vacuum pot under vacuum?

Works for wood.
