Hi , I love my niche folding chef / cooks knives. I happen to have bought an A G Russell hocho folding chef knife 1st gen. What caught my eye was the blade was VG 10 made in japan and loved it ever since. Only issue is I'm looking on eBay to buy an other one in vg10 only issue I only seem to come across ones that are made in ats 8 I believe, or something to that. Are the vg10 blade more rare? If so how can I find out? I've emailed ag Russell a few times without any luck.

I "think" the AG Russell folding hochos used to be ATS-34 before they changed to VG10. All these models made in Japan are now rare since they have been replaced with models made in China some time ago.

Well that's interesting... Bc I have a vg10 that's says made in japan.... I've noticed a ton of ats models though... They're rare none the less but I have seen only one other vg10 version since I got my about two years ago.

The ATS-34 and VG10 ones were made in Japan. The Folding Cook's Knife II which came later and replaced them was made in China with 8Cr13MoV. Did you buy your VG10 Hocho direct from AG Russell's shop?

Ahhh ok. No I bought it unused from a secondary market

Ah thought so. About 5 years ago I was looking for the AGR VG10 Hocho and discovered that they had been replaced. I should have picked one up way back for travelling. Now of course travelling isn't happening so I guess I don't need it right now.

Ya I've been looking for that maruyoshi santoku .... It's a myth... The messermeister adv chef knife is good I love it just not agr hocho 1 quality. It's made in china but cool as hell none the less.

I'm skeptical about the sarge foodie , some say it's made in china others say italy. I want to almost get one so I don't beat up my hocho as much.
