How can I fix this?

Vertical blade play

Purchased this knife in 2012. Sent it in to have it sharpened about a year ago and they replaced the liner lock for free while it was there. Said they "fixed" the lock on the invoice. Pretty sure they just gave me the newer version (which was fine by me - bonus!). No problems with the lock to my knowledge when i sent it. This vertical blade play has just recently developed. No hard use, just basic edc tasks. Should I be concerned about this or is there anything i can do myself to keep from having to send it in? Any known problems with the newer versions of the lock? When i say newer, my old lock had finer serrations.. the "new" one is more aggressive.

Sometimes things happen, but there aren't a rash of lock rock issues on any models I'm aware of. The best course of action is to send it in to Emerson, they will fix it. There isn't much you can do yourself to fix the issue. Trust me, Emerson will take care of you.

How loose is the pivot? Can you flick it open and is the blade centered?

Thanks,
ER

Sounds like a worn blade stop bar or the blade tang interface for the stop bar. I had a CQC-8 fixed that did that, just last month in fact. 2006 model, and it was covered under warranty and promptly fixed. Mechanical device, it happens.

Sounds like to me but it's hard to tell without seeing it. The blade will center itself when the right amount of tension is applied to the pivot bolt. From there it can be broken in properly. Some people like to loosen the bolt immediately without breaking it in first. Not saying you did this but it's just really common. Unfortunately I would recommend that you send the knife in so that we can properly diagnose the problem if there is one. Everything will be covered under warranty.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

ER

Thanks for the quick response. I'd say not super tight but not super loose. Loose enough to be flicked open, yes. Centering looks dead on to me.

Tightened it up in small increments and played with it. It is a little better but still happening. Got it tight enough that its definitely not flickable and its still doing it. After tightening the centering shifted toward the clip side just a tad.

Just watch you vid, the pivot looks too loose IMHO. Lockup is late too, and that also points me to stop bar. My guess (all it is) is a slightly larger stop bar will make it correct, along with proper pivot adjustment. As a 2012, that would likely be a backspacer model too, which have alternating opposed body screws. There is a proper reassembly procedure to get correct centering.

I think the primary reason would be that the pivot is too loose. The Emerson brand of knives are a little "tighter" than other brands. What I saw in the video that leads me to believe that the pivot is too loose would be the fact that the lockbar was shifting around when you were wiggling the blade side to side. If the blade can essentially change angle from a loose pivot within the area of the washers and such, the alignment of the lockbar interface of the blade would be out of alignment as the blade wiggled about.

Suggest you send the kinfe to EKI in U.S.P.S. PRIORITY MAIL BOX, insured for f or $50.00 for free, free tracking. Send note with knife describing problem, as for repair.

SIMPLE.

The play is only vertical, no side to side whatsoever. I guess it could have been too loose in the beginning but I'm not big on having it loose. Just loose enough to be able to open one handed with thumb and/or wave it out of pocket. I tightened it down pretty darn good after I got these responses and it still had some movement up and down. I'm leaning towards it being something with the face of the lock or the tang of the blade. I can't tell much with it together, might take it apart tomorrow and have a look.

yep send it back again they can fix it or put another lock bar or liner lock again. Your in good hands. These guy in here will defiantly help you out with your repairs. Hi boys saw this when I was checking on my other post how interesting. I know they will fix it again so dont try and do it yourself just send it in. The knives have a great warranty skilled warranty department.

I would say send it back at this point. The only thing that comes to mind now would be the fact that the lockbar interface on the liner has worn down where the contacting surface is now curved/convexed and/or it is making 100% contact along it's interface. Hope you get it all sorted out quickly and easily!

Just for the sake of safe experimentation, you could put a piece of masking tape on the surface of the blade tang that touches the stop bar to see if that alleviates the problem any at all. It's non permanent and only to get insight as to what's amiss - the knife is still in need of service even if that seems to work.

Got the knife back from emerson today. Liner lock was replaced and the issue is resolved BUT, I didn't get my box back.. Should I have just assumed i would not get it back? To clarify, i shipped the knife in its box, inside another box..

That's interesting, I would have thought they would have returned it in the box. I'm sure they will send you one if you asked.

Sorry about that. Your box probably just got misplaced. If you send an email or call, they can send you a new box.
