Hi there I am a Canadian in hopes of someday living in the US. I called Imigration today and talked to the biggest butt head in the world. He told me it is pretty much impossible for me to enter the US. Is he right? I thought that the free trade agreement made it easier for us Canadians to move to the US. Please can you give me all the info possible. Thanks. Geoff.

Hmm...I don't know squat about immigration but I'll give give you what little information I know. I think that our immigration laws are set up so that a limited number of people with skills we are short of are admitted each year (hi-tech fields come to mind), family members of U.S. citizens, folks with lots of capital to invest, and refugees that are in danger in their homeland.

This is probably the wrong forum for this non-knife thread so I expect it to be moved. I'm sure that there must be web sites galore on this topic. Now my question to you Geoff: As I U.S. citizen, I've always thought it would be cool to live in Canada...what would I need to do to be able to do so? And has it changed with "free trade"? Cheers!

Considering that the BC branch of IATSE would rather pull homeless people off of the street to make films there instead of temporarily bringing in professionals from south of the boarder, I have no sympathy for you at all. Free trade should be both ways, so complain to your own legislature first.

Sorry Gunner, trade and immigration are two totally separate issues, and are therefore dealt with by two totally different federal agencies. In other words, trade and immigration have nothing to do with each other.
My best advice would be to go to school and earn a college degree. I work in the medical field, and I can tell you that there are thousands of Indian and Pakistani doctors in the US, and a lot of Registered Nurses from the Phillippines. I'm sure that other professions have members from foreign countries too.

I guess you could also get married to an American, but having gone through more than my fair share of marriages, I would recommend that only as a last resort. Better to live sane in Canada, than instituitionalized in America..... };-)

have fun,
Phil Reedy

The easiest way to do it is to have a US Employer sponsor you. If you can swing it in medical or high tech it should be fairly easy to find a US company to help you.

And don't worry, your employer will know how to get you through the process (which by the way can be very expensive).

By the way...this tread is not knife related and should probably be move to the community area.

Yep. Community.

For the name of an ethical immigration attorney who knows more about this stuff than the average random knife nut does, e-mail me off-forum.
