How can I improve the grip on an ATC VTAC?

Just picked up a VTAC and I'm really digging it. However the grip is absolutely terrible. It feels too slippery, like if I was holding an icicle

Would wrapping it in electrical tape be a good solution? Or is there any kind of special kind of grip tape for these types of problems?

If your willing to take the time and do it right, use a heat stipple. I think there may be a video or two on you tube of a sog tomahawk being treated this way. You can use a light sodering tool and gently go over the raised "diamond plate" etching on the handle. What this does is give the raised diamonds a course grip. Take your time and it will be a permanent fix..........and looks super cool to boot!

With this being said, quite a bit of thought was put into this particular handle the way it already is. I happen to like the grip myself and if you do a heat stipple, you will compromise the throwing nature of the tomahawk if youu are a thrower.

For a nice quick alternative you can get some of the grip material used for tennis rackets, bats or golf clubs. It is easy, inexpensive, easily replaceable and it allows you to add as much or little as you like.

There are a few better options than electrical tape.
Hockey tape, used to add grip to hockey sticks. it's cloth but it does have good purchase, and is easily removed or replaced.
There is a product that is like thick silicone rubber tha sticks to itself and stretches, and has a nice tacky texture. can't recall the name but I have seen it in plumbing and electrical sections in hardware stores. Lee Valley actually sells some similar stuff specifically for adding grip to tools, in a variety of colors, and cheaper actually.
One more option is tennis racket grip tape. A good sports store would have these and probably other types of sports grip tape.

These are some great ideas, thanks guys!

The heat stipple idea is great but I don't have the patience for it, and on top of that my hands are sloppy when it comes to fine detail work. So far I am liking the tennis racket tape idea. Will it last long? I would hate for it to start coming off leaving that sticky residue on the handle.

Also, as a side question how does adding grip exactly compromise the throwing capabilities of the hawk? I am thinking of throwing mine for fun once in a while but now that Snakebreaker mentioned it wouldn't be too good of an idea to add grip to it if I intend to throw it i may be having second thoughts.

Adding a texture to the handle will interfere with a smooth and consistant release. The least amount of "grip" you apply to your handle, the more accurate you will be when throwing. Putting tape or rubberized type sleeve on the handle will certainly help it stick to your hand better, but if you do want to make this a thrower as well as a chopper or beater, you might want to reconsider that stipple. Its the lesser of evils when it comes to throwing and maintaing some grip. Its actually pretty easy to do.........and fun!

Knifein............Im terribly un-savey when it comes to computers. I will try to get my wife to take some pics of one of my stippled VTACs and post it so you can see. Let me try tomorrow. Maybe that will help.
