Is there anyone out there who can send me blueprints, or step by step procedures on how to make a balisong? Books? Videos? Chuck?? I would really like to try. Can someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks -g

Making a bali from scratch isn't the easiest thing in the world. You have to make handles, thats probably the easy part. Making a quality blade yourself is going to be a big challenge for ya.

I'd recomment starting with modifying existing balis. Not your custom 3" BM spearpoint (ooooo... custom BM spearpoint... mmmm...

) but how about mod'ing a Jag or, like for my first project, a Cudeman.

I hope to someday make a bali from scratch. It may never happen, but I can dream.

Check with your area Vocational/Technical school. I taken several machine shop classes, at night, that give me access to all their equipment, i.e., lathes, mills, surface grinders, etc... and the cost for a 90 hour course is a little over $120!!! They even supply the machine tools and a lot of the materials; you can't find a better deal! You don't have to tell them EXACTLY what you're making..........Good Luck!

I thought about this before and heres my assesment:

Its not as easy as folding a piece of paper to make a paper airplane. You have to carefully map out the positions where the holes for the pivot and tang pins go in relation to the handles you make. The thing to remember is that some bali's have handles that contact eachother along their entire edge (think of FHM) while handles have a small gap (think BM's). And proper tang pin placement is necessary for the handles to be inline with the blade when locked open, else you'll have a banana shaped bali. The only thing I can think of that a trial and error approach would work would be for making the kick on the blade.

This all doesnt sound so encouraging, does it?

but if i had the time and the resources, I think I would atleast attempt it...

ChuckG (not gollnick) is the man to ask for help on the subject, but right now he is beck deep in frustration with his own balis.. all in all you just gotta get to that millign machine and get rockin.

Thanks Snipe, he emailed me last night. Anyone else with any info? Mr Samson you around?

Sgtp's concern about the kick was answered by John Salley, to my satisfaction, about 12 years ago when he delivered my custom butterfly with an adjustable blade stop. The temptation to build my own custom has finally overwhelmed me so I've enrolled at the local Vo-Tech for the 90 hour night school course( for the 3rd time ). If you folks don't mind, I'll try to keep us with the incurable 'butterfly disease' posted with my progress. I'll put up some particulars as I get things down on paper but it will have a forged and differentially heat-treated blade. I'll 'cheat' on the tang end and use a surface grinder to keep everything right on. More later...........
