How Can I Remove Jimping Without Removing Metal? What to Fill Gaps With?

Hi,

I've got a few knives that I want to remove the jimping on the thumb area on the spine, because I just don't like it.
It sores my thumb after extended use; so, I want a smooth surface instead.
So I'm wondering if there is any type of material which would stay in place and look good at the same time.
I thought of soldering some lead on there and sanding it to fit, but then there's the heat treatment issue.
Glue would also work, but I'm hoping you guys have something better to recommend.

Any suggestions?

There is nothing that will work sufficiently.
You might try "breaking" the edges of the cuts with a file or abrasive.

Hmmm... yeah, I guess... but I mean, it's not like there's going to be much stress on that area if I use some sort of putty or chemical metal or whatnot. I'm just wondering what type is the strongest and perhaps best-lookin'.

Sometimes there's a very fine line between 'rough' & 'comfortable' with jimping. If it were mine, I'd just smooth it a bit with some sanding (wet/dry sandpaper). Just enough to take off all the hard edges of the jimping; could make a big difference in how it feels under your thumb.

You might try JB Weld. It would be grey in color, and might be a nice contrast.

quicksteel maybe? its basically an epoxy putty that hardens like a rock. can be milled, drilled, and tapped, so I guess it can be smoothed somewhat.

There is nothing to hold the epoxy in the cuts, so it will flake out.

You could try rounding the spine and jimping, it really makes an improvement to thumb comfort without making the knife look funny.

I rounded the spine and jimping on my Sage I. It feels much better to me, but it did not make the knife look funny.

When I have a chance I may also disassemble my Dragonfly and do the same.

Fine grit sandpaper. I had a similar issue with the squared spine of my Spyderco Moran Featherweight, which I hear is for striking a firesteel, but I don't have any of those lying around. Stuck it on my Worksharp against my 600MX belt and it fixed the problem right up:thumbup:.
