I just got a Kukhri from Himalayan Imports and I was wondering if there was something that I could do to Dull the shine on the blade. I think it is a great knife I'm just not a shiny type of person. What could I do to get rid of the shine without ruining the metal?

Thanks, Silas

You can hand sand the shine and get a nice mat finish or you can get some ferric chloride from radio shack and dilute it about 4 parts water to 1 part ferric and put the blade in this solution and that will dull it. Neutralize with vinegar and wash with soap and water. Oil it upo when done.

Mirror polished blades are inherently more resistant to rust, especially valuable in high carbon steels.

I had though of the blueing idea but was'nt sure. Is there anything that I would need to do to it first or would the gun smith have it all under control.
Also, whats involved in that process? How would it hold up to abuse?

Yes you can apply gun bluing or ferric chloride. However if you just use the kukri it will become darkened by and coated with sap and stuff from the jungle you cut down .I use mine regularly and don't bother cleaning the blade ,it's dark now .I love my kukri !

I'm not too sure about the "neutralize with vinegar" part...
I darkened a 1095 blade with vinegar.

The steel will patina with age and use, I wouldn't sand it.
Try the vinegar dip or do a search for 'mustard patina'
That looks kinda damacus-esque.

I cold-blued one of mine with some Birchwood Casey solution. Just follow the directions and make sure the blade is really really really clean before you start and it should turn out nicely. The cold blue is not as tough as a hot blue but it should hold up fairly well. Mine has just rubbed off right by the very edge. It's easy to touch up as well.
