How can spyderco tell if you disassembled one of their knives?

I have an Endura 4 wave knife with an insane amount of blade play. even when all screws are tightened and the blade is very hard to open, there is still blade play. There was blade play when I first received it, but it was my first "real" knife and I thought that blade play was acceptable. Being naive and new to knives I unscrewed all the screws, but I did not fully disassemble the knife.

My question is, what will spyderco do if I send them my knife? I am hesitant to get rid of my waved endura as it has sentimental meaning and was the start to my collection.

What are your guesses as to what Spyderco will do with my knife? and what should my next steps be?

Thank You in advance.

I have never abused the knife, it has not seen very much use other than cutting paper and occasional cardboard. In fact I hated cutting with it because it is so thick and just kept it for sentimental reasons.

Your obviously not happy with it the way it is, send it in you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain! I had one opportunity to use spyderco customer service and I was 100% pleased with the outcome.

What I am afraid of is for spyderco to take my knife, and replace it. I don't want to get rid of the knife but at the same time I want a better work

They have equipment that can determine if a knife has been taken apart. I mean, they make the darn things after all right?

I agree with Mike. Send it to Spyderco and let them fix it up for you.

As long as you have not not damaged the knife by removing the screws I think Spyderco will still honor the warranty. Whether or not you caused any damage would be their call though.

Give them a call and talk to someone in customer service. Be sure to let them know that you want the knife back and not a replacement.

It won't matter that you've loosened the screws. If the lock is faulty they'll fix it.

However, there is a certain amount of vertical play that is normal in at least their frn lockbacks. What is an insane amount for you?
Can you just shake the knife and see the blade move? Does it move noticibly when cutting? Or does it just wiggle a bit when you grab the blade and try to force it?

If its the last one they may just send it back saying its within spec and you'll be out a decent amount of money for shipping seeing as you're in Canada.

It is difficult to cut cardboard confidently with it, with out feeling the blade give a little, even when I tighten the pivot the vertical blade play is still there.

spketch, a bit off topic but is your military still for sale, I know you stated Us only, But is it possible for me to pay the shipping cost?

Shoot me an email, my address is next to my avatar.

Regarding the endura, I think the reccomendation to give spyderco a call is a good one. Maybe they can help explain how much play is acceptable.

Pretty easy to tell if a knife has been disassembled...

If there are tool marks on just the right side edges of the screws, it has only been assembled. If there are tool marks on the left side, it's been disassembled. Pretty easy to check.

I think the policy is a deterrent for people who have no business picking up a tool tampering with them.

1. Contact Spyderco and inform them you are sending it in.
2. Send it in with shipping included.
3. Get your knife back and be happy you sent it in.

(They are not going to confiscate your knife unless it is a knock off)

But couldnt one argue that they were loosening the screws and not fully disassembling them?
Relax.

Spyderco will take care you. Just call them and be honest and don't hesitate to ask about anything bothering you.

There have been many cases where Spyderco fixed knives when they had every right not to. Happy customers are repeat customers.

Yup, it's a lot easier to keep a customer than to find a new one.

Thank for all the help guys, Spyderco Is my favorite knife company and will always be, I have gave them a lot of business and I will continue to do so. Lets hope I can get my endura situation solved.

If you make a note that the knife is sentimental they won't simply send you a new one if they can't repair it. And you won't know what they can do for it until you send it in, or at least call them.

I think their stated warranty is more for people that send in a bag of parts, or those that have modified and/or somehow jacked up the knife by fiddling with it.

Don't expect them to try diagnosing problems by phone or internet. Too much room for mistakes and misinterpretation. Sure, ask questions all you want but don't be offended if at some point they say they need to get in to look at it. Put yourself in their position and you might see why. :) Also, if you get "the letter" returned along with the knife don't take it personal.
