How can the EdgePro do recurves?

Doesn't it use flat stones? I have a handful of recurved blades that need help too.

As far as I can remember, when I asked Ben Dale about this, he said you just sharpen it like a normal blade. The recurve is sharpened by the edge of the stones, just in the same way that the belly of the blade is sharpened by the middle of the stone. He said it probably won't polish up as well, but will still get nice and sharp.

I remember a post (maybe you can locate it with a search)with someone saying that he used the Sharpmaker ceramic stones, clamped in the Edgepro stone holder, to sharpen recurves.

BTTT

I am considering an Edgepro and have several recurve blades. I would like to hear more on how well the system works for this blade style.

As Deon evidently remembers, I posted a while back on the subject of using a triangular Sharpmaker ceramic hones in my Apex. I thought it worked out really well (and I was touching up the edge on a large Apogee with a highly wear resistant CPM-420V (S90V) blade, so this technique will work with any steel).

At the end of the Apex handle is a large ball. Just unscrew the ball and then remove the small cylindrical spacer between it and the adjacent hone securing clamp. Once the spacer is removed, the clamps will now open wide enough to accept the full length of the Sharpmaker triangular hone (point down, of course). And then just sharpen as normal.

I should add, however, that others have also reported simply using the stones supplied with the EdgePro on recurves with no problems. I prefer a slightly more polished edge, so the Sharpmaker stones work a little better for me in this regard.

I have the EdgePro Apex and it works just fine on my Sifu, Carnivour and khukuris. It will sharpen using the edges of the stones when at a curve. The EdgePro really works great. The extra coarse stone will not last too long since it's aluminum oxide and not diamond. The only diamond stones that would fit in it are medium, and reprofiling needs extra coarse. Just take your time and let the system "find the edge", unless you're reprofiling!

Hank
