How can you tell if your buying a 2nd or blemished knife?

I've recently bought some colored '10 delicas , one of which came from another source. Upon anal inspection of the knife I found what I'd call a blemish.. It's close to the tip of the blade on the spine, only on one side and looks like a little dimple. When you turn the knife in the light you can clearly see this, you really cant feel it but its still there and its a new knife..

Do people sell seconds, are they stamped on box as such or ???

Any thoughts?

no I haven't tried to clean it, appears its in the metal.

a notch on the inside of the hole or on the blade itself?? or spine?

a second will have a notch ground above the hole.

Are you sure its not just uneven grind lines? I've have seki spydies in the past and they have had uneven grinds, sounds similar to what you are describing. Can you post a photo?

Bohica what is wrong with the knife that made it a 2nd??

That's the funny thing. Not a damn thing that I can find. Other than they put a notch in the spine!:D

It's a PE Merlin that the Ebay seller failed to mention was a factory second. Once I saw the notch, I went over it very carefully.

All I can say is that Spyderco's QC people must be VERY picky (a good thing in my book), cause I can't find ANYTHING wrong with it.

I made it to the factory seconds sale for the first time last fall. Most of the seconds I purchased were way less flawed than my personal tolerance. A couple I'm pretty sure had been returned by people too anal to be allowed to purchase production knives. A few I never did find anything really wrong with.

The only seconds I know of being sold online and shipped in Spyderco boxes were the BushcraftUK and various Mule Team seconds. All others have been sold only at the factory sale, the last of which took place before the release of the flat-grind Delicas.
