I am not encouraging copying other peoples ideas and designs but how come no one copied the tri-ad lock?

The axes lock was copied
the frame lock is copied

How come the tri-ad lock is not?

While the Tri-ad lock is innovative, and undeniably strong, I just don't have a need for hanging weights off of knives.

the framelock and liner lock are not patented locks, Michael Walker and Chris Reeve did not patent their locks so that they can be used by everyone.

As to the Tri-ad lock, I have no idea. people are content CNC'ing lockbacks and midlocks

It seems to me over the past few years that most copies of locks have been liner-locks.

Lockback designs are still popular to an extent, but there are probably more liner-locks out there now.

Frame isn't a proprietary lock design.
Axis was copied after... 10 years, I suppose.
Tri-ad is still a new design, you just have to wait few years more ;)

It would be hard to copy without making an exact replica so major companies won't touch it for legal reasons. Wouldn't be much sense for Chinese copies since there are readily available Tri-Ad folders that are very affordable ($30-60 all day, every day) - pay a little more for real deal. Copying Axis, Compression Lock, Frame Lock with Hinderer Stabilizer, etc. where most are $100+++ makes more sense.

You can find knives with axis lock for 70$ (Griptilian), and knives with tri-ad lock for 200$ (Espada). And Chinese fakes cost about 10$ per piece, they are copying designs of Byrd knives, red class Benchmade knives, CRKTs, there is no difference for them.

Cold Steel and SOG (and probably a few others) have to pay royalties to Benchmade for their Axis type lock designs. I assume they originally wanted to skirt the issue entirely but from what I understand it ended up with them paying a royalty fee.
