How custom can a busse get?

So my brother-in-law and I have been watching busse videos for three years, read tons of posts, looked at the Busse knife group websites, and finally it happened. The trigger was pulled and I now own a TGLB.

Now my Brother-in-law has started saving and has about half of what he thinks he needs, his goal is $1200 so he can order a custom, I have started saving as well but still have a ways to go.

My question is to the staff at Busse or anyone who has custom ordered, but how custom can you get? Share your expierences.

Can you get something like a rodent solution in Infi, with blue/black G-10 and artic coating, with spine serrations, and a choil?

If anyone has some sweet customs feel free to show them off here.

Believe it or not I have had the same question on my mind for several months. I would also like to know to a more extreme level of how custom the custom shop is willing to go. For example, a battle mistress blade with the tank buster handle and pummel. Can that same blade be shortened to a much shorter length, shorter than the original selling length? Also, can that same blade be nuclear meltdowned on the blade side only. I really hope you find the answer to your question and I look forward to find out for myself from the responses from this thread.

I am sure you will get Garth in here answering soon, but you would be best e-mailing him direct about what you think you may want, the rest of us would just be speculating. What you probably wont get is a Swamp Rat or Scrap Yard blade made from INFI (unless it was one of the specials that was a "factory" option) or a Busse blade from SR101. From what I have seen most of the custom blades start off as a standard Busse blank and the fun starts from there. :D :D

I don't believe they will use INFI on a Rat or Dog model that wasn't originally produced with that steel. Garth is the best source for Custom Shop information.

Visit this page: http://www.bussecustomshop.com/, under Shop Now you will see the ideas for finishes, handles, and blades. There is quite a bit that can be done, but there are limits. Previously it has been stated that custom work is 100.00 per inch. Don't know if that is still true or not.

Good luck....

We can do a lot of different things but ultimately Jerry has the final say in what the shop will do. It really is best to email me with your specific questions because there is no one single blanket answer that works for every scenario. Yes, true custom piece starts at $100 per inch of overall length pending the final approval of Jerry. Most of the customs we do start as a regular blank and then it is modified from there within the parameters of that blank. Anything that goes outside the parameters of an existing blank would fall into the realm of a true custom. For example, a blade can generally be shortened, that is a modification. A blade cant be made longer from an existing blank, that is a true custom. Material can be taken away on a modification but material cant be added. Again, every modification is different and there is no one single answer that works for everything. Hope that helps and again an email with your specific questions to me: garth@bussecombat.com would be the best way to proceed.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I might be saving awhile if it is $100 an inch.

You and me both Firestrike. Also, thank you to you Garth for such a detailed and coherent response. Hopefully you will be hearing from me soon. ;)

How about an ASH1 with an ergo handle? The best of (my) both worlds! Stay warm out there in Ohio...Cheers.

I have always wondered about the 100.00 per inch, is that blade length or overall ?

that means a ratmandu length blade would cost you 1000+. Yikes.

If you keep reading after the bold words he says "modifications" and later refers to "true customs" again like it's possible that a choil could be considered a modification and therefore would not fall under the true custom pricing. At least that is what I hope that means.

This is my take in bold below would seemingly be the $100 an inch custom, then underlined would be modifications to an existing black for ??? dollars per inch.

Thanks for the info! Not sure the lines of the ASH1e would look that appealing. But there's an idea for a future model...Cheers.

Last night I traced an ASH1 blade with an ergo handle. Looked much better than I thought it would. Now, if one of you folks with the equipment and ability could Photoshop those two together we could really see that set up. Thanks in advance...T

It's quite simple really... :)
Purchase and ship 2 cases JWB to Busse Combat Knives, one ATTN: Jerry, the second ATTN Busse Crew.
Track shipment, when delivered, wait 2-3 hrs.
Fax or email in a drawing of the wildest desire of your Hog heart, fantastically shaped in satin INFI with matching handle material.
Call Lexi, make sure Garth didn't take the whole second case of JWB, and give her your CC info.
Wait 2 weeks.

No problemo!
OINK!

Note: DO NOT send Cheap Booze! Another Seahorse incident could occur!!!
