How did I choose my first CRK?

To make the first step is sometimes the hardest... with too many superb CRK models to choose from, it's really difficult. I was (finally!) choosing between Large Sebenza 21 and the Small Sebenza 21... but somehow ended up with a Small, Plain Ti, Damascus (Ladder). How? When I saw the CRK production date, it was my birthday (mm/dd), so there you go. I bet you die-hard CRK fans have something more interesting to share than mine... :D

No, i think that's pretty awesome you have your birth date on your knife.
I would love that!

My first Sebenza came with my birthday.
I will keep forever.

Just always was the small pj 21 for me. It was, and absolutely still is, the most perfect EDC knife of all times. I have not even thought of another CRK that I need(ok, there was the small 21 with micarta, but I reasoned with the fact that i don't want any non metal stuff or anything glued to my sebenza..)

Had a hard time justifying the purchase but as I go along and use this knife, taking it apart and lubing it, and using it some more, I realize I just can not live without it. Sure it is expensive, but no one else makes this blade to this level and there you go. Pay up.

I bought my first Sebenza from Anne Reeve at Blade West in Portland in 2007.

Sounds like your 1st CRK purchase worked out well for you. My first CRK was a small 21 sebenza no inlay and ordered it with a regular clip point blade design. I carry it most days and it cuts what I need to cut with it. I feel the large 21 is way to large for ECD carry. I am fit and enjoy being light and fast. A small 21 sebenza will do everything a large will do and with a much smaller footprint. Just my .02 cents worth.

Chose the Jereboam first way back in 1987(?). Why? Big, tough, one piece blade. and the rather exotic "Made In South Africa" moniker certainly helped. Recently bounced between Seb 21 and 25. Best used 25 deal came up first here on BF, so went with that for my first Sebenza. Got the 21 shortly after that...;-)

I have seen so many Sebenzas made on August 27th... Which sucks, considering it's the day after my birthday. And I even have one from Aug. 27, 2014. It was actually my first CRK. :grumpy:

That's good enough, consider it as a post-bday celebration! :D

I've pretty much settled on getting a new large drop-point CRK Sebenza 21 with plain titanium slabs, double silver or blue thumb studs, and my last name engraved on the back. This is not an outlandishly custom knife, so I hope the wait time won't be incredibly long.

If you order direct from CRK, I think it will probably be 4 or 5 months. If you want it quicker, you can order one from a dealer and send it to CRK for the lugs (if you can't find a double lug version) and the engraving. That would probably only take one month or so.

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm thinking maybe BladeHQ because I've read several positive reviews about their service.

Yeah you save the time but you will have to pay for double thumb lugs $35, obviously return shipping $15 plus whatever shipping costs. Thats $50 right there. Then the engraving I dont know if thats free or if they charge if you send it in. It would almost be better to get a used one off the exchange, send it in for spa and double lugs and engraving. Unless you want a new never used one.

If you buy new, a double lug large 21 is $445 and a single lug is $410. That would make it a wash if you sent it in for the $35 lug.

ETA: It might take some coordination, but you may be able to save a bit on shipping by having BHQ ship to CRK instead of to you first.

Yeah like Corksin said that is another option. But if you buy a used large 21 just some marks on the scale and clean blade (ive seen many) you might grab one for $300 or even less, spend $35 on double lug silver, blue, gold your choice, return ship.$15, engraving (dont know this cost or if its free), hey your still in it for $350 lets say roughly.

Or buy a new one double lug $445.

As far as the engraving goes i have not seen many so i dont know it might be something you could always consider later. Personally I dont want to see my name on my knife, its like having serial numbers some people dont want it traced or just linked back to them ya know? I dont know. It might take away from the knife and its on the lockside you wont see it because its covered by your hand. Ive tried customizing or mods and liked them for about 5 minutes and then sold or traded them away. You might love it keep it as an heirloom because you wont be able to trade it or sell it unless someone has the exact same name on it. I had a few custom chuddy bear sheaths ordered for my busses with my initial, damn that took forever to sell.

Gentlemen, I suppose putting my name on a knife stems from the fact that I'm going on sixty and personal items were often engraved with either a sentiment, because the item was a gift, or your name as a form of identification. So my watch is engraved because it was a present from family for my fiftieth b-day. My dress shirts have my initials, as does my cigar cutter. And my suits have my name above the inside lapel pocket. I know it's kinda weird, but I grew up in the sixties. A better example might be from back when I did construction during my college days. One of my first job foreman told me to mark my tools with my name just in case they somehow got legs.
