I just got this one for about $18 shipped. I may have over payed a little but I really couldnt care less. Its a Plumb military hatchet. From the other pictures it looks like the date reads 1942. Obviously it needs a new handle but I also plan on sanding it down and cold bluing it. What do you guys think?

It doesn't look so bad that you'd need to sand it down. Under that rust you'll find a beautiful patina. Just clean it up with a wire wheel and rehang it. I think a good natural patina looks far better than bluing.

The blade doesn't look too bad. It isn't heavily worn at the toe or sharpened to a thick bevel. Should be easy to sharpen up.

I like the 1942 stamp. That's cool.

If she were mine, I'd clean her up, remove the rust and then use a primer on her. For a final finish to the head, I'd paint her olive drab green (O.D.) flat finish. Rust-O-Oleum has a O.D. Ultra Flat Camouflage spray paint that is a good match to G.I. O.D. You can find it in the paint section at Wally World.
But then I have a small collection of 6 military axes. Just my thing.

Great find. Double Ott

i dig it:thumbup: and if it were mine... i'd do whatever i want with it, and suggest you do the same

Looks like a nice find. I like old military tools. I'd pretty much do what Double Ott suggested. Go for the original GI issue look. It should look nice however you end up refinishing it.

Post a picture after cleaning it up with a wire wheel if you get a chance.

Got it in yesterday but didnt have time to post or clean it up.

Im thinking about an 18 inch handle for it. Meanwhile im not so paitently waiting for a new wire bush to come in as nobody around here has them for a semi descent price.

Those were meant to go on a straight handle, drab green or brown, about 12 inch long for ease of transport.

Got to work on it a little today. I got rid of most of the rust and removed some mushroming as the back of it was hit with a hammer.

Now to find a handle for it.

I have one in a similar style but smaller that my great uncle gave me a couple of years ago. It's marked US like yours, but doesn't say Plumb.
He got the hatchet while in Korea.
