Several years ago I had the opportunity to play with a Strider GB. This was one that had really been worked. The pivot was loose to allow a wrist flip to open it and this left the blade with a little wiggle. The danged clip was such that I'd never be able to carry it in my pocket and I would rarely carry it in a knife sheath. Put all that together and I refrained from the Strider folders.

Fast forward to yesterday. I finally broke down and bought a new Strider AR with coyote brown scales and tiger striped blade. I was actually anticipating a knife that probably would not be centered, a poor lockup with the liner, a rough edge, a stiff as crap action, and just general poor fit and finish. Boy was I blown away!! What I pulled out of the package was a knife that had a perfectly centered blade, a lockup that is solid as a rock with the liner comeing over just perfect and leaveing plenty of room for any wear, a smooth and sharp as hell blade, a S M O O T H action and one that I even had to tighten a little, and finally it had excellent fit and finish.

The only problem left was that danged pocket clip. This one has the new clip that only takes one screw and has the little "tit" that fits in a hole above. Got to looking and an idea popped into my head, one that would require very little work. I removed the clip and then I removed the rear most frame screw. I had some longer screws of the same type as I tokk out and used one of them to mount the clip into the frame hole. Only had to use my Dremel to shape the top of the clip so that it would be square with the handle. I applied some blue Loctite, and tightened it down to the max. I now have a Strider folder that only sticks about 1/4" out of my pocket, instead of the 1" it had before.

This is really a sweet knife, and a definate MEGA folder. Been riding my right front since yesterday and will continue for a while. It'll for sure be in my pocket Saturday morning when I hit the Blade Show, and go by the Strider table to see what goodies are to be had!! :D  :)

Cool looking knife but I have to admit I'm a little confused...Why would you buy a knife if you were expecting it to be junk?

I always figured I could correct some of the problems. With it being a Strider I also figured I could sell it for what I had in it. I wasn't really expecting to get a piece of junk, it's just that I was thinking about the early models and they have been improved since then.

The villagers demand pics of the clip mod Art. :grumpy: :D

Nice score Art. I just yesterday got my 1st Strider...a PT. Wow, Striders are impressively  built knives to say the least. Hope to see a pix of your clip conversion also.

I was a little worried about fit & finish issues before I bought mine too. I'd read any number of posts about off centre blades and stiff opening and so on but I decided to go for it anyway. I was very pleasantly surprised to find my new SnG had no problems of any kind. Easy smooth action and the blade only very very slightly off centre when closed, everything else was just fine. I think the boys have been paying more attention to these things lately.

So if I understand how this works, by this time next week, you'll have a whole collection of Striders, including a few very rare hand ground Strider and Dwyers. Then by this time next month, you'll have discovered Brian Tighe or Rick Hinderer and all the striders will be on the block? :p :p

Cool knife. Glad you like it.

I was looking at the top two knives and trying to work out why the blades had a really odd shape to the edge and finally realised it was the bubble plastic doing it.

Must get my eyes checked ...... :)

Ya, the Custom Dwyer is at a weird angle. Here's a better pic. (or two)

It's my current fav. Dwyer double ground extreme tanto SMF with Razorwire finish on both sides, a trisula, and black grooved handles. The reprofile on my sharpmaker went pretty quick because the angles were so close which is cool cuz it took me 2 hours to get my plain SMF where I wanted it.

(sorry for hoggin your thread Art)
Edit: I was missing an o in my groove

Just checking here to see if Cliff came by to dump on Striders yet while he mentions what other knives are better than it.
;)

Great knife, Art. Enjoy that great Strider. It's un updated classic.

I started with the Strider/Buck/Tarani and got very interested in a real Strider so I also got my firts Strider (AR) this week - awesome knife - although I read quite a bit about the AR and the fact that it was big and chunky and solid the size of it still came as a surprise.

SmF is on the way!

I also was worried about my recent purchase of a Strider SMF. In the past I had some issues with AR's and an SnG. My SMF arrived 3 days ago and my concerns were nullified. The fit and finish are fine, lockup solid, blade centered, etc. It's quickly become one of my favorite folders. Next up I think a "Nightmare" SMF of some sorts inevitable.

I've already discovered Rick Hinderer. And a fine maker he is!! :D :D

Perhaps a side by side with the Strider? They are both in the same ballpark $$$ wise (more or less) and only having one folder is getting a bit boring even if it IS a Sebbie. Been looking, but so far only Hinderer's have really caught my eye.

OK, you're back from BLADE, but I'd still like your take. Whaudda think?

Rob

Wetdog, as far as the Hinderer's go you can't really go wrong. The Extreme model is close to the AR in length, other than that we are talking two different beasts. The Extreme is more refined, while the AR is just plain a brute. Now refined does not meen fragile, as the Hinderer Extreme is built for a lifetime of use and then pass it on down the line. Then again the AR looks to be built the same way!

I didn't even think to show them the mod I did because I was too busy drooling over the knives they had on display. I was able to score an EB-LS fixed blade. This is the one that has the same general shape of the AR. They even threw me in a Strider T-shirt!!

Did someone say ADDICTION?!?! Just bought another AR off the forums. This one has the tiger stripe camo finish and black G-10 handles. It does have the old style three screw clip, but I'm trying to buy a one hole clip from Strider, and also figure I can work on the three screw clip with my Dremel to make it the way I want it.

So, lets see.......2 AR's and an EB-LS in a weeks time. Goodness, what will a MONTH bring??  ;)
