Well fellow forumites, looks what you've made me do. In the blink of an eye (well, actually more like six months or so) I've gone from admirer to full blown addict...

First I started with the Kabar and at the time I didn't know the first thing about knives (well I still don't know much compared to most here at Bladeforums). I've developed a love hate relationship with Kabar USMC Short but more on that later.

Then I got the Recon Scout. Then the F1 (still my favourite). And in the last four weeks I've accumulated the Kabar Folding Dozier, BRKT Bravo1 and finally the Aurora with amboynia wood handles and matching firesteel.... SHEESH!

Luckily my gf has accepted this new addiction with good grace and now only rolls her eyes momentarily when I announce the imminent arrival of my latest purchase. At my current rate though I'm going to have a serious cashflow problem, not to mention an emarrassing lack of arm hair from all the stropping I've been doing (I've converted the Recon Scout to convex and am still working on the Kabar).

Good, now that you've gotten the warm-up buying phase out of the way, you can move onto the serious buying phase:thumbup:.

If you've ever heard of Moore's Law, think of knife collecting in a similar way, though replace the number of transistors on a chip with amount of money spent on a knife, and two years with two months.

I was originally going to get a Busse BWM but decided to get two Barkies instead, easier to explain to my girlfriend ;)

Oh btw I forgot to tell y'all why I love/hate the Kabar. Out of the box it came like a spoon - razor edge by a$&%! I tried to sharpen it using a stone - big mistake. The shape and thickness of the grind relative the cutting edge makes this thing very difficult to sharpen for a novice like myself. I still don't see how one can be expcted to get a sharp edge when the angle is so damned wide!

I've been trying various approaches to reprofile the edge and have settled on convexing it since I've basically done that with my ham-fisted attmepts so far anyway.

I hear you on that one. The full-sized USMC Kabar was the first fixed blade I ever sharpened. Mine ended up looking pretty much like yours by the time I was done, with the coating removed and patchy along the (secondary?) bevel where I'd missed a bit with the stones.

Enough practice and you'll get it wicked sharp, though.

I've got it back to a semblance of sharpness but compared to my F1 it will never be able to compete. Actualy even the Recon Scout, with its thickness of 5/16", is MUCH sharper than the Kabar. And that's after I've reprofiled the edge to convex too.

But everytime I spend an hour trying to return it to its rightful glory I come out with minimal progress. And then I look at the classic shape, excellent ambidextrous sheath (I'm a leftie) and fantastic handle, and I decide to spend another hour!

Of course I could fix it all up in a jiffy with a belt sander... If I had a place to put one... :(

I started collecting knives less than a year ago.

good luck with your new addiction :)

That's quite a variety of different brands, viva la.

What are those five blades arranged along the top with the boxes?

Actually it's the standard SharpShooter sheath that shipped with the knife. I love it apart from the belt loop, it's too small I think and makes the knife sit too high. I prefer sheaths to hang further down the hip. I'll check out that JRE site though - looks like some lovely products!
