How did they do that?

I have recently seen some staglon handled knives, both folding and fixed, that do not have the dark accent color overlaid on the base cream or tan material. So how did they apply it? I would have guessed that it was brushed into the mould before the plastic was molded, then rubbed off the finished handle to add the highlights. But experience has taught me that something undesirable happens when we ASSUME too much. Can anyone enlighten me on the process? Anyone at least have a different guess?
