I thought I'd start a thread about how you first got into knives. If this type of thread has been done already, please forgive me and ignore this thread. If not, post your first experience(s) that made you a knife fanatic forever. My first experiences were my Grandpa, my Father, and my cousin showing me their knives, and watching movies like Crocodile Dundee when I was a kid.

I started out as a kid making wooden knives and swords out of whatever I could find. Then the Military and being a life long hunter and fisherman, it just fit right in. I first started collecting Vic SAK's and it just got worse from there.

How did I get into good knives? After watching a Cold Steel video I started doing research and found Blade Forums.

Watching my grandfather whittle. He and his friends would sit on the front porch of the general store in Mossy Grove TN and "Swap Knives". I remember my grandfather bought me a pearl handled Case at that store and I wound up getting it "swapped" for and old Anvil folder on that same front porch...but not before I cut myself bad enough to get stitches. I was 8 years old. I would give anything to have that knife again. I still have the Anvil. I guess I have been trying to replace it ever since.

Well like any boy, I always been attracted to knives or anything that can be dangerous however I really got into knives ever since I purchased this crappy M tech mall knife that i could not sharpen for the life of me. This led me here to learn how to sharpen. Then I started learning about steels, picked up a Kershaw D2 Outcast and I was hooked. I was more of a chopper guy but recently bought a Emerson CQC 15 after I swore Id never pay more than 70'sh for a folder, now im in love with well built purposeful folders. I love this knife and the steel. The Byrd Cara Cara got me looking into another "flesh" knife since I use the cara for hard use stuff.

Anyhow, I'm pretty happy with the Emerson and wouldn't mind getting maybe one other folder preferably in CPM3V or D2.

My Mom got me into knives as we used to go camping and fishing; and she gave me a knife to use. I have been hooked ever since. It has been MY pleasure to be able to get my Mom some really nice knives to use. She also always carries a knife.

They were a necessity. My dad was a very good hunter and always carried the best rifle and the best knife he could afford. He didn't have a lot of them, just one or two of the very best. When I was old enough, he made sure I had the same.

So, I'm spoiled, sort of. I never stopped collecting the best rifles, but I did slack off on knives. Now, I'm back. :)

Dunno really, always liked knives, but only started seriously collecting this year after I met a guy in Calgary who collected. He opened my eyes to an amazing world of well made knives and knife brands. I have the addiction now, always browsing knife retailers online now, despite my lack of funds to actually purchase the goodies.

most of my family are magicians and i got into knives when i was like 14 and i was doing a rorutine where i sliced a peice of rope in half then restored it and i was using some cheapo hardware store knife and a friend gave me an old benchmade i cant even remember which model. but i started to get more and more from there

I heard about all the school shootings last year, and I decided I wanted to carry something. I looked at my state's knife laws on a web page (which had a link to this forum, which is how I found it), and at the bottom were a bunch of recommended "nice" knives. Some were $50+, others were 100+. I said no way; I'd never pay that.

So I bought some S&Ws and was disappointed with the quality. So I finally did pay money and got my first "nice" knives, my Delica and my Ti-Lite. 3 months later I got an Endura.

PS: I don't really carry a knife primarily for SD anymore; I learned that and many other things from this forum.

i was about 12 years old and saw my uncle playing with a butterfly knife. i asked to see it and flipped it with the wrong handle and sliced my frst knuckle nice and good. then my mom went on to tell me "see, thats why you can never have one." that was it for me i was hooked. lol

My dad got me a Case Barlow when I was around 12 or so. But I think my interest was really piqued when I read an article in Parade Magazine at around age 14 or 15 (around 1970) about how switchblades, and stilettos were still readily available in NYC despite the 1957 federal ban. Shocking! I wanted one!

Back when I was about 9 or 10 in the late '70s my uncle asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I said that I wanted a jackknife so we went to the local hardware store and checked out the knife display. I chose a Case XX Patter #35 two-blade knife and still have it to this day. I've carried it thousands of times and used it for all sorts of daily tasks and camping chores. I wouldn't part with it for the world.

In college I decided to get something bigger and more solid after going through lots of cheapo folders and got myself a Benchmade. I've now got a decent collection of users that go with me everywhere. I feel naked without a knife in my pocket.

My Grandfather gave Harry and I each a Case folder to carry. We were going into the first grade. Back in the 50's a boy was just expected to have one.

I was at my uncle's house helping him clear some trees that had fallen in a storm and saw him open a blade with the Carson flipper. Turned it out with a CRKT M16 of some sort. I ended up messing around with that knife the entire time i was there. I saved up some money when i got home (this was I think freshman year of highschool) and got a CRKT M16-03Z... which i only recently traded.

I agree, Y Chromosome.

I wanted to get into a particularly combative box of fruit loops and so I opened the knife drawer and picked out the biggest knife in the drawer and proceeded to bring the pain to the cereal box.

never been the same since then.

I found an old Kabar 2 blade folder in the neighbors yard. Cleaned oiled and sharpened it and learned how to use it. 30 years later .... you all know the tale...

Its like finding a puppy, You care for it learn its needs and quirks and years later you say "well I guess I'm a dog person"

Well I guess Im a knife person.....
