For me I do not even know what year it was but I enjoyed this survival magazine. My memory is not crystal clear on this but I think the steelheart was in it as the fixed blade and the benchmade afck (or something like that) was the folder. I think Ron hood was the author of it but i'm not even sure on that. Seems like Ron could not say enough about the knife in the article. (funny though on his website I just checked he no longer mentions it, only tops?) maybe He wasnt the author. man my memory is poor on this i'm not even for sure on the name of the magazine I think it was American survival or something like that. (hadn't seen one at books a million in a while)

I just remember it was a really cool article and he was cutting stuff like frozen moose hide . Even though I will probably never get the opurtunity to cut frozen moose hide It still was very impressive to me. (running short on moose in ky!)

just nosey as to how everybody else heard about these knives. Oh and maybe trouble some of you that do have lots of moose to send me some moose hide that I might indulge myself.

I first heard about Busses briefly from a friend. Later on I found this forum and lurked for a while. Finally broke down and chatted. It was such a family environment (with the exception of drinking...kids still have some time to go :D ;) ) and bought my first busse from one of the good guys (that is most if not all in here).

Now I can't stop buying them, unless forced. Jerry and the rest continue daily to reinforce why I mainly if not only buy Busse Combat knives.

As for the moose, you want a hide? or the meat?
Either way, I wish I could help you out. I need to buy a large freezer and then find someone to go hunting with next year. Never been. Sad quite really. Anyway, my first was the PT-5

Shortysdadd, thanks for stopping by!!

The article you are thinking ofthat had both the Steel Heart and the AFCK was written by Ron Jaworski for "American Survival Guide" magazine.

That article was actually what got me definitively pointed towards Busse knives.

The list of Ron's requirements seemed like they far exceeded anything I would need a knife to do, but that were within the bounds of what would be needed to live in a survival situation.

There were also other articles written by Ron Hood. Since then, Ron has found that Tops knives fit his own requirements more.

It still took me a couple years to rationalize the price of a Busse. In the meantime, I picked up and AFCK, and it has been my constant companion. I am probably going to replace it soon with a Rat Trap, the folding offer from Swamp Rats.

My first Busse was a cord-wrapped Mean Street "apprentice" knife.

The same day I placed an order for a Steel Heart.

That too has been with me (or close by ;) ) ever since.

I have a copy of the article in a Word doc. If you'd like it, drop me an e-mail.

I discovered Busse Combat via Swamp Rat. The Swamp Rat discussion forum was really good, and I got myself a Ratweiler (which is a great knife). Then I began to investigate why/how Swamp Rat had come into existence, and just had to get a Busse. And the rest, as they say, is history.

I first heard of Busse knives some time after the 02' NYCKS. I had left the show and was not too thrilled with a conversation I'd had with a maker about a design I was trying to have made. I had spoken to a couple of makers about the design and the response was pretty much - "Get bent"
No one was intersted. So I said F**K it, and I was determined to make it myself. Since I knew almost less about making knives, then I did about virtually anything else I researched the hell out of it.
When I consulted a friend of mine, about a couple of the design points he mentioned in passing "That looks tip looks like a Busse flying tiger".
I found this forum, Bad Mojo and a couple of weeks later I spoke with Marc about doing a custom. It was the first knife I ordered from Busse, It would be a Flying Steel Heart w/ the serrations. It would be perfect. That would be two years ago almost to the week. It's kinda funny since the knife that started the addiction, still hasn't left the shop yet. :D

I bought my first Busse after getting the internet 3 or four years ago, an NO-e. I was so impressed with it I eventually purchased an active duty with snake skin handles. the rest is history, like many here I become addicted. :D

To prove that I was of sound mind, :D apart from a few butchers skinners over the years I had purchased a Puma Hunter Friend around 1970 and carried it daily for around thirty years, still have it. A little worse for wear these days, as well as narrower.
It can tell a few gory tails though. :D

Knives in Australia then were very limited, Puma was the optimal choice, years later I had seen Buck’s advertised in Aussie gun mags, but never bought one. Though, I never really had access to knives from shops in the big cities. Really only from catalogs.

I was looking for a serious knife, and I went to the Chris Reeve site. There he had a link here to the Blade Forums site. After browsing around a bit, it seemed pretty clear that Busses were the prefered hard use blade. Here I am several years later, and I'm still sending Busse my money!:)

Like David, I heard of Busse only after buying a Swamp Rat. I got into the SRKW forum on a whim (just cruising the Manufacturers' forums) and saw a shot of the Satin Battle Rat. Knew I had to get one. Now I have three Rats. i even purchased my brother a Rat Trap for X-mas.

Maybe someday I'll pick up an "actual" Busse. Til then, more Rats.

I met Mr Busse himself at a blade show back in the 80's where I bought a field grade tanto.Did'nt hear much for several years but saw articles in blade and knife mag's.And now I have owned most all models(new models)made ,exception being made to all the customs made.

I found Bladeforums several years ago when doing some research for a knife purchase. It wasn't long before I heard about Busse and began hanging out on this forum.

After more Busses and Rat's than I can count I'm still here.

:D:D

I bought a Chris Reeve Green Beret and thought that I had found the end-all tough ass knife... ... So I went online to verify that the wisdom of my choice and I found BF...

...it's two years later and I traded that sucker for a Satin Jack :D

I have pictures of my close-knit family of Busses if I can get someone to host them.

While reading a Cliff Stamp review. I was very impressed, and wondered what kind of knife it was. Not long after searching, I found the Battle Mistress, and the price tag, and immediately thought, "way too much $$$", but now I have a bunch of Busses! Oh well... they're worth the money.

What he said :D

A few days before i joined this forum, there was a auto accident that happened right in front of me.

I stopped to help and a lady in her 70's had her foot trapped under the brake pedal and was in alot of pain.

I called 911 and i tried tp get her foot out but i couldn't. A few minutes later the fire truck pulled up and a fire fighter rushed over to help.

He pulled out a knife and used it as pry bar and got her foot loose.

I asked him what kind of knife it was and he said it was a Busse and you could not break it.
I know the Randall i did carry would have snapped in half if i tried to use it.

A few days later i did a net search and found you guys and called Jerry Busse and made my first order.

I went to the fire dept and found the fire fighter ( EMT} and found out the Busse knife was a Badger model and its just a part of him on or off the job.

He never leaves home without it!

Thats how i found out about Busse Combat Knife Company. :D  :D

I saw an ad for a Steel Heart II in a '96 issue of Tactical Knives magazine. Call Jerry up and ordered one while I was on leave in New York.
