How do forum knives work?

I am relatively new to the forum and I got really excited about the forum knife article for this site that went up a little while back. Since then I have been wondering a few things;
Are they for member only?
Paying or no paying member?
Do you have to pay in ahead of time to get one?
Do members get first dibs of the knives or does spyderco offer them publicly?
Does anybody know when it comes out? I.E. Upper ups in the forum or does spyderco surprise everyone?
How is the type of knife decided?
 
The forum knives I've seen have been an open to anyone product but the forumites will have a discount code to use when ordering.

As for the inside of the process and who gets to pick what blade no idea.
 
Wow, so I just discovered I can pay to join Bladeforum and get some increased privileges. That makes so much sense. I had no idea!
