I have a budget tanto that I'd like to regrind into a drop point. I think I would only have to remove a little bit of material. Should I just go at it with my sharpener? or should I attempt to remove material with a dremel?

What kind of tanto do you have that only a quick job would be required to make it a drop point? I think you're going to have to remove a lot more metal than you think.

You'll probably be looking at using a belt sander or something. Just make sure that the blade doesn't get too hot.

I've ripped a few tantos down into nice, curved belly drop points. I went at them with an Edge-Pro at a pretty shallow angle to re-profile the bevels and arch the goofy angles that modern tantos use.

Clean up and final sharpening went pretty quickly after that. My wife has one of them (a CRKT) in her purse. Won't give it back for anything!

i'm with thg, what kind of knife is it? i would not use a dremel on the edge but you can use it to shape the spine down. if you try a file, make a test cut to see if a file will even cut the blade. the hardness might be too high. i have reground blades that a file would not even touch so you might need a belt sander to do the job.

It's an Enlan L01. I guess that what I want to do is just round the tanto "point" (don't know what to call it).

I wasn't thinking of touching the spine or the grind. Even though the "belly" is pretty damn straight, I was just going to leave it as is. I'm terrible with photo editing, so I won't try to alter it as an example.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

"Budget tanto" = files.
i forgot that part bill :D. and a "budget file" will probably work too but i would use a nicholson or another good brand.

if you round the belly you will also need to thin the edge in that area since it will be thicker.

Rough file should do. I removed the 'teeth' from my Victorinox OHT on files first, then sharpened it. However, Enlan's steel is 3-4 HRC harder than Victorinox, so I'm not very sure.

Or you can try sidewalk concrete like what Philwar did ;)
