How do I explain this to my wife?

I recently decided to start a collection of folding knives, primarily tactical-style. So far, I have "squandered" a chunk of my end-of-year bonus money on about 10 knives from CRKT, Spyderco, Benchmade, and Emerson. My wife thinks I'm nuts, and she doesn't appreciate my "wasting" all this money. "How many knives do you need?"

How do I explain this to my wife?

Anyone else in the same boat?

The only thing I can say is to handle all of your home business first before you get the knives. I wouldn't hurt to get your wife a little something too. I know from experience that knives are addictive and hanging around Bladeforums can really alter your perception of what's alot of money for a knife. It never hurts to remember that most folks look at a $30 knife as huge investment. Finally, get a budget and stick to it. The fact is that there will always be more cool knives than you can buy unless you are Bill Gates.:D

Its an investment.
Show her how a few years ago you could buy a Busse for 200.00 and now the same knife is selling for 650.00

I don't know how to help you with this one. My wife is ok with me buying knives. She figures there are worse ways I could be spending the money, like on other women.

I've tried the, "I bought it for $100 now it's worth $500", she told me "It ain't worth S**T if you don't sell 'em"

She's right, so I keep em instead.

The other alternative is to find someone else who shares your hobby, I believe there are 3 left.

Just be honest and let em know it's better than gambling or hanging out in Go Go Bars. That works for a while.:)

Oh man...you bought all that at once...?

You can never explain that to a woman...
Buy a little at a time...and in between get her stuff as well...

As a last resort if all else fails, you can always pick out the ones that you really want to keep (being sensible here) and sell the other ones for what you paid for them. Give her that money and tell her that she can now get something that she wants. From then on place yourself on a steel budget maybe buying one every month or so....

When she asks "How many knives do you need?"

Merely ask her in return "How many pairs of black shoes do you need?" :D

Hey it worked on my wife. Someone else on this forum deserves credit, as that's where I learned it.

I like that. Let's see what my wife says when I tell her, "It's better than spending the money on other women." Problem solved. I'll have to sell the knives to rent a room somewhere until she lets me back in the house.

Yeah, the bad thing with that is you get(so when did you decide to stop spending it on them and start buying knives)

...You bought 10 knives in a short span of time???...That was your mistake, as you didn't give them time to "blend in" with everything else that you own.

It's too late now...You might just as well send those 10 knives to me so that you can tell your wife that you have seen the error of your ways and are getting rid of the offensive knives...:D.

Just say you are trading, not selling. I make trades all the time, they just happen to be one way.....steel for cash trading:cool:

OK! Here's the solution to all your problems!

Go out and buy your self a fully fitted out Phill Hartsfield Katana,
cost about $6000 dollars. After she freaks out and tries to kill you just tell her ok sweetheart i'll never buy another custom katana! I'll just stick to buying cheep factory knives!:D She should be so relieved she'll never say another word about the knives you buy.

If that works let me know and i'll try it on my wife!LOL

Some people collect baseball cards, pictures, bottles, guns, etc. My wife and I have separate ckecking accounts and c. cards. We both contribute to the common fund to pay bills and put some in savings but I have my own $ for the the things I need for fun and interest ( she doesn't spend as much but shoes and clothes are her thing ). If collecting blades is a joy for you then go for it. Joy is not a "waste". Life is short.

It gets easier as time goes by and you buy so many knives that she can hardly tell which ones are new. Of course, that depends somewhat on who is home to receive the packages :D

Tell her, well, if I can only have 1 knife (or 10) then you can only have 1 bracelet, or 1 pair of earings, or 1 necklace, or one ring, or one watch, etc. :)

Tell her they are like Jewelery. Sometimes she feels like gold, sometimes silver, sometimes pearls, sometimes diamonds. Sometimes you want serrations, sometimes plain edge, somethings 3" blade, sometimes 2", etc. :)
