How do I find and fit a handle to an axe head?

I have the following axe head. Don't know where it came from and I don't have any company name on it either. I want to get a handle and sheath and give it to my eleven year old son. However, I don't know how to find a handle for it. The eye measurements are 1 19/20 long and 13/20 wide (at the widest point). The head weight is 1.75#. What do I do?

I am not sure how much work you are willing to undertake, but you
could try to sand one out of a log or stick. That, or modify an axe
handle to fit the eye.

Take it to your local hardware and find a handle that doesn't need much rasping down, or buy online from somebody who gives their dimensions. "An Axe to Grind" is a usfs or somebody pamphlet with a section on hanging handles. It's available online. There's plenty of hanging content in this sub-forum, but you could get confused by conflicting philosophies.

If you choose to buy a handle, be sure to check the grain.
You want the lines to be as straight as possible. Otherwise,
it may be weaker.

Just watch this already mentioned video. Great info. The part you want is near the beginning.

Good luck! ;)

hickory handle store (on ebay) selling 19" handles for those types of heads. I'm sure House handle co. has some handles that would fit these as well. As stated above, an axe to grind is a good first step for learning how to hang an axe. Most often that not, some or more than some trimming of the handle is needed to fit the handle. In short, the head should slide on somewhat easily at first and then once seated on the handle (before wedging), the center cut or kerf should be open as well as some room on the sides of the top eye - to accomodate the wedge.

I think those Hudson Bay style hatchets (1.75 pound) are best hung on mid-length handles, 24"-29". Personally, I'd put it on a boys axe handle.
Save the short handles for the lighter weight heads.
