How do I get a Mule?

I'm interested in getting a Spydie Mule, but every time I have logged onto their website over the past couple months to check they are always out of stock.

Is there some trick to getting one (only available on certain days or months, sizable bribe offered, secret handshake, etc.) or does anyone but Spyderco's factory outlet ever sell these blades?

I could be wrong but pretty sure they all sell out rather quickly. The place to look is in the secondary market. I bought mine on the big auction site for a few dollars more than I should have paid but that is what the market commands I guess. No remorse here.

You're not wrong, you're in the X ring. They do sell out quickly when they're released, so if you miss that, B/S/T forums or auction sites are the place to go for the earlier Mules.

in case you didn't know, the ones that are out of stock will never be back in stock... you have to wait for the next release, in the next steel.

discussion builds on this forum, and the factory forum when release is imminent.

Yes, I understood that Mules are limited quantity test runs and once gone they're gone they're gone. I'd just like to get one once they are available.

I'm not certain which secondary sites or auctions might offer them since I've never purchased anything used online except books. Any suggestions?

thEre's that Big Auction site You could try.

Not a big fan but sometimes it's a last resort to get my fix.

When a horse and a donkey fall in love....

;)

Post in the wtb section and check the fixed blade individual for sale section for them ;)

The only Mules I found on that Big Auction Site were going for $150. Is that a typical markup for Mules?

I do want a Mule, but not a $150 one. That's approaching custom made knife territory.

I didn't pay that for the two I bought there! Think I paid 125 for the Super Blue and 90 for the Elmax I got there a few months ago. A bit elevated but sort of hard to obtain these days and as I said, I didn't mind paying what I did.
Obviously waiting for the right deal anywhere is key and some Mules are worth more than others. Research and as another post mentions put ads here in the WTB, check the fixed blade FS subforums, and maybe add a line in your signature stating what you are looking for.

You could start a wtb thread here listing the steels you are interested in.

He'll need to upgrade to Gold to do that, though.

That's sort of on the low end for most of them other than the MT-05 (9Cr18Mo). The really desirable ones go for a lot more.

Registered users can no longer post in the trade area, but unless the rules have changed (which is possible), I believe anyone can start a WTB thread.
Good luck on your mule hunt SCWillson!

The mark up for knives thwt are no longer in production can go 10times thwt amount and more. Try finding a Military with carbon fiber handles and an S90V or BG42 blade. The prices are determined by what someone is willing to pay for them. Someone might like that knife at $150 and be willing to pay $200 or more.

If you keep your ear to the ground Spyderco typically will announce when they are going to release their next Mule (date and time it will go live, once they are close). Otherwise secondary market is the only other option, which obviously is true if you are hunting for an already released version. Not a big fan of the auction site so I'd recommend knife-specific forums such as this. Hope this helps.
