well...

I just got a WWII khuk for my marine friend. It was not sent to me in mint condition because there was a whole in the leather scabbard and rust speckling on the blade. I dont want to have to go through the headache of sending back this khuk for a new one. Im hoping yall can recomend to me some relatively cheap means to fixing these problems.

The scabbard im guessing i can fix with some kinda liquid leather.

The rust speckling on the blade is very minor and very difficult to see unless you look at it at a certain angle but its definately there. I dont know how to get rid of this stuff though.

Please advise on what I should do because I dont want to give a knife that I have been raving to my marine friend about in anything less than mint condition.

If yall recomend that I send it back to Bill I will but Id rather avoid the trouble if I can. thanx in advance

Hiya!

I recently removed some rustspots (well, actually they weren'r RUST rust. Just some black spots) from my AK.
I used a ball of stainless steel strips (I bought this at a kitchen supply store. NB! it wasn't the usual steel wool) to rub them away.
It worked like a charm, but caused some microscratches on the blade.

I tried to smooth out the microscratches, but the result was that I only put on more of them :D
Pic of my khuk HERE. I guess the result wasn't that bad after all (at least after I polished it with Turtle Wax).
Too bad my camera stinks

Take care!

yah its not RUST rust... its just very very minor speckling... but its bothering me lots.

Isnt there such thing as rust remover or something that I can pick up at a hardware store? :)

Maybe metal polish will work and i can polish it right out?

rust remover
All the chemical rust removers I've been in contact with (sorry, don't remember names, but do remember I used Ketchup once) only eats the rust and leaves behind those black spots that you've already got.

I think you will have to apply just a tiny bit of mechanical force in addition to chemical stuff (should you choose to go there) in order to get totally rid of those spots.
Good luck, buddy!

Take care!

I got a tube of MAAS polish from Home Depot, and it seems to work well on every metal surface on a khukuri, from brass to steel.

The "rust bar(?)" type rust remover A.G. Russell sells works good. Will remove rust & do a little polishing. I generally follow that with some auto polishing compound, then some type of rust preventing oil like Sheath, WD-40, or any good gun oil.

MAAS? what is that?

Id suppose that some kinda metal polish should take it right out. I know I have an old can of Braso around somewhere.

metal polish should work right?

SimiChrome Polish works good; don't have to oil the blade. Don't know about Brasso. Flitz is also a good metal polish to use after removing rust spots with rust remover bar & polishing/rubbing compound.

I used naval jelly to take off the black rust from leaving my katana in it's leather scabbard. Did well, but needs some polishing compound. Fine steel wool doesn't remove the dull finish from the spots where the black rust was. May try Flitz or simichrome.

You mentioned "very difficult to see unless you look at it at a certain angle"

Are we talking something that looks like grainular specks
or like grey water drop stains.

The latter I see often & it's from the "oil" the blades are
treating with before shipping.
A good soapy wash will remove the latter.
You could try Birchwood Casey Bluing & Rust Remover on real black rust spots.
Not sure apout result of that on blade's polish.

This evolves into a great thread (at least for me!).
I got some questions:

DKP: Will applying oil after polishing with car wax have any effect? I'm asking because I primarily use my khuk as a showpiece to sit on a shelf, but it sees some hard use on occasions. Would oiling (before I use it) help preventing black spots the next time I bring it into the woods? I thought car wax provided all the rust protection I needed (note, I don't own a car, so I really wouldn't know ;) ). The oil I used before is the same that I use for my rifles and shotguns, but the black spots appeared the same second I swung the khuk. I seriously thought the oil (I use) was part of the reason the black spots appeared. Some sort of patina rust resistance triggered by voodoo oil  .
Next; Simichrome. How does that stuff work, and is it available in Norway :D ?

Rusty: Naval Jelly? Another enigma for a "learner knifer" in Norway...

Guess I'll still be using ketchup for rust removal, heh :D

Take care!

Post Scriptum: To remove the microscratches from my khuk, I used a small buffing wheel (or whatever they're called).

Naval Jelly is apparently a thin gel like compound originally used to remove rust on ships.

When I've used it it's taken the rust off down to bare steel and left the surface a duller but clean area that needs more of a polish or buffing than sanding or sttel wooling. This was very light rusting.

Thanks for the info, I'll see if I can get hold of that stuff from where I'm situated, it sounds very practical!

And don't you worry, none of my knives ever get more than light rust :D . I baby 'em.

Take care!

ok I got rid of the rust and I used NAVAL JELLY to remove the rust and BRASO to restore the shine and po;ish the blade. WORKED GREAT!

thnx for the input guys.

The naval jelly worked really well but it left my blade stained with the goo and i couldnt get it off until i polished it... it took 2 trips to the hardware store bcs i didnt think id need the polish but I did.

again thnx a lot. Im about to meet my friend and give him his gift :)

For future reference I think ill use a weaker rust remover... naval jelly is a level 3... and i think i only need a level 1 rust remover... i fugure the gentler the better.... that naval jelly sure is powerful stuff.

im very anal about the mirror finish on the blade and the navel jelly dint leave any permanent dullness... but i did really have to use a lot of braso to get it in tip top shape again. Thats why next time ill go with a weaker rust remover

It actually worked?

( here, you can have your leg back now ):p

Maas is a metal polishing creme available in tubes or 1.15 pound pots.

It's advertised as safe for and effective in polishing everything from brass, silver, copper, aluminum, chrome, stainless (although they have another product for brushed stainless), gold, pewter, nickel, tin, cast iron, glass (includig hard water spots), porcelain, fiberglass, polycarbonate, linoleum, etc. (there are a bunch of other materials listed on the box the tube came in, but I got tired of typing).:)

It's made in the US and is available online and also The Home Depot, Walgreens, Target, Walmart, The Home Depot, Villager's Hardware (a Home Depot Company), Lowe's, Meijer, Payless Cashways, Jewel/Osco, Winn-Dixie, Canadian Tire and Zeller's ... phew.
