I just got done sharpening the swedge of my knife on a grinder to make a double sided blade. I took the blade off the grinder every few seconds and dipped it in a cold cup of water, the blade never got hot enough to burn me. on a couple ocasions touching the blade did sting a tiny bit because of the heat. but not bad at all. anyway. if I did damage the heat treat, how would I know about it? thanks guys.

The dead giveaway will be a discoloration in the area you worked on. Brownish or light blue discolorations of the metal will tell you. If there's no change of color, alls well.

Carl.

I was in a hurry thinning out the blade on my benchmade griptilian tanto folder,(on belt sander) and while it cuts well its edge holding ability is not what it used to be, after few cuts some parts of edge are just dull!I havent used water or anything and probably blade overheated as I saw some discoloration.....will try to grind away the edge and get to the better steel as I think just the tiny portion of edge is ruined!!

if it never changed to a blue color you are ok. water boils at 212 degrees and it takes over 400 degrees to mess with the heat treat. if you never made it sizzle sticking it in water you were never close to hurting the blade.

i think it was little blue on edge.....it loses edge very fast now even though its 154cm....few cuts and it wont shave hair....one part of edge is ok....

a thick blade should draw heat away fairly fast. i bet over time you get past the bad spot. try a convex edge on it.

i got convex edge on it but will make new one....dont like tanto configuration anyways!
