How do I remove my para 2's lanyard spacer when disassembling the knife

Hey guys,

Got my first para 2 a while ago, and I need to take it down to re lube it. I know this voids the warranty and I do not care. I watched a few vids on doing this and everyone seems to have a different technique when removing the lanyard spacer thingy. Is it recommended by those who do take down their para 2's not to remove this and rather, just swing the liner and scale around using the lanyard spacer as the pivot, or to remove the lanyard spacer. I know this is press fit but there has to be a safe way to remove this without causing any damage. Anyways. Thanks in advance for the responses and apologies if this is a double post. I looked for this for couldn't find.

As far as I know, the lanyard tube is not press fit, it is slightly flared. Taking it out will probably result in a loose fit and possibly damage the scales. So just stick a screwdriver between the liners, twist hard and see what happens.

I personally used a strong stick with a soft end to it. Hammer + strong stick with soft end = lanyard tube flying out.

You might be able to work it out slowly by turning the handle scales and gently prying.

Found this on you tube, hope it helps.

Some Para-2s are more difficult than others.

I use two separated halves of a clothes pin on either side of the tube and twist each clothes pin half slowly to provide even pressure on both sides of the tube (rotate the scales a few times putting pressure away from each other before and occasionally during).

Using wood keeps the damage to the liners down and it will bend or break before bending the tube. Use a penetrating lube around the tube (like CLP Break Free or WD-40) first.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's been really helpful. This isn't my personal para 2, rather a friend and he gave it to me to put new scales on, cleanng, and lube on cause he was scared but I was also wondering because I just ordered my first spyderco, a para 2 and I'm stoked and this will be helpful.

Once you get all the rest of the screws removed, then just twist the handles around the lanyard tube and one scale/liner should pop off. The second one can be fairly easily removed by using a 1/4" (0.25") wooden dowel. It will fit tightly and enable you to push the tube out of the other scale with little chance of damage. It is fairly quick and painless.

WHATEVER YOU DO: resist the urge to grab the lanyard tube with a pair of pliers or vice grips. You'll end up bending it and scratching it. Trust me - it never turns out good...

Good luck!

Just keep pulling it until it comes off....LOL...JK....gotta work it slowly. Helps if you just keep turning it like a helicopter blade few time, wedge some paper note pad in between the liner...keep adding thickness to the note pad....it'll pop off
