How do I sharpen my IGF

I will hopefully receive a 12 inch MMHW IGF that I ordered soon. It will come unsharpen.

I am thinking of getting some files to start off the edge and then move to the hard and soft water stone I have.

Is this the proper plan and if so is there a proper file(s) to get other than asking for a course and finer grind.

Any advice ?

Hey Core,
Ted's knives come good and sharp, unless you ordered it unsharpened.I got a White River bowie a short time ago. It came plenty sharp with a good working edge. I touched it up and made it razor sharp- I don't plan on chopping down any trees with it. E-mail John Gonzales and he will square you away.

The IGF was purchased from one of Mr. F's dealers who said it was unsharpen. I have a K19 bowie which is like your bowie and is very sharp. Only issue I have is that it is very heavy. The IGF is suppose to be lighter.

How is the weight of your White River is it easy to handle?

Hey Core,
The W.R. is heavy, but I can wield it very swiftly after a bit of practice. I practice with it like a short sword. I also have a Cold Steel L.T.C. kukri , it is a fast fighter. With practice the weight is not a bad thing. I like to practice swift direction changes, and other moves;) Well, let me know how the IGF is when you get it. By the way where did you order it from?

I order the knife indirectly from a ebay merchant call CompCons they have a website under the same name.

Hi Core,
I could not find the sight that you got your knife from. When you get it put up a post and tell us about it.

You can file hardened steel, but it is going to take some pressure so be prepared to lean into it. You will also want a quality file like Nicholson. I would also get some lapping compound, 80 grit or coarser to use on the coarse hone to speed up the polishing after the filing.

You could also make "files" by buying sanding belts and gluing them to strips of wood. You can get really coarse belts, ~40 grit, which will strip metal off very fast under high pressure. The belts are very cheap, only a couple of dollars, so you are looking at ~10$ for a few grits.
