Hi all
I am new to the forum and new to knifes in general. My father passed on to me a Puma Original Bowie and in general is in great condition for its age. However it does have a small amount of rust and black shade smeared across the sides of the blade that I want to clean off.
Im a bit stumped though, in order to take apart the fixed blade knife I need to remove 3 large brass washer to take of the stag horn that is the handle. Is there a tool I can get, or is this a clamp and hammer job?
Many thanks.

It's not as easy as you think. You must remove the heads of the steel rivets.
When you put it back together, these rivets must be replaced with new ones and peened in place.
Puma blades are generally hard chrome plated, so removing rust is very difficult without damaging the plating.
Post pictures of the knife, please.

Thank you for the quick reply. What tools and method would I used to remove the steel rivets? You say it could be damaged if not done right, so I wont be able to soak it in acetone and use steel wool to get the rust cleaned off and ready for sharpening? Here is a link to pictures of the knife- https://photos.app.goo.gl/kxj4X1U7BU2jARdy6
Thanks for taking the time.

The knife is rusted through the chrome plating. You won't be able to polish it out without removing all of the chrome. This is not something you want to try. Just Squirt some WD 40 on the blade and scrub it with a cloth.
Taking the handle off won't accomplish anything. Not only do you have to deal with the rivets, there is a piece of brass tubing that is flared in place in the handle.
I repair knives for a living, and the best thing I can tell you is to use the knife as it is. Any attempts to improve it will likely ruin it.

Ok, thats a shame. I thought I would be able to make a proper job out of it. I will take your advice and get at it with the WD-40. I have a 3000/8000 wet stone for my axe, will this be ok for this blade aswell? Thanks for the guidance, it is much appreciated.
