How do I turn a bayonet into a knife?

Hi, I'm a newbie but I have an interesting scenario her. I have a new bayonet approximately 9inches long and it was never sharpened before. So, I want to know what the procedure is if I want to turn it into a knife. I have some guesses such as:
using a bench grinder to bring it "sharper" before using a stone with oil to give it an edge;or
using a file to bring it down then use a stone with oil for the edge.
What about utilizing heat or cold to temper a blade - whatever that means in layman's terms.
Cryogenic processing is beyond my means as I want to be a "McGyver" and turn it into either a workhorse knife or a pole-arm. Thanks in advance

to get a rough edge use a diamond file. i use a 1"x30" belt sander, starting with 220grt, going to 320, and putting the final edge on with 600. this is tough for many people to use becuase if you slip you put big scratches into your blade. with a diamond file you have less a chance at scratching and can see what your doing. you can't use a regular file, they won't cut. and if they do cut a little you'll wear it out fast. the hardness on a good file is only 65rc. and that's not good enough to cut a blade of 52-62rc hardness.
