how do knives become discontinued?

How do manufacturers determine when a knife is to become discontinued.

I'm looking into getting my first Benchmade(s). I like the 730 and 735, but those are discontinued I found out.

I then looked at the Griptilian 551 BT OD (olive drab handle and black blade), and those seem to be discontinued also.
 
Not to many people like them compared with the alternatives so they don't buy them. Inventory builds up. The manufacturer stops making them until inventory goes back down. If inventory doesn't go down then the manufacturer can only assume (1) price is too high, or (2) marketing department isn't seeing the right customers or giving the company good customer feedback.

Check the Exchange part of this forum and i"m sure you will find one in almost new condition for a great price.
