Hi guys,
I'm sort of new to the forum. First post. What do you all use to sharpen your knives? Do you strop weekly as well?
What angle is factory for the Doug Ritter Griptilian? I typically use a stone and sharpie but figure I might as well invest in something like a lanksys or spyderco Sharpmaker.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Welcome. I use the Edge Pro system for sharpening, and sometimes, depending on my schedule, will send the knives up for a factory re-do. Yea, I strop my favorites regularly, at least once a week if they're put to task. This includes all of my kitchen knives. Benchmade's techs sharpen by hand. On a good day they do a terrific job. On the other side, most all of us have had problems that required a return trip. Lately their QC has been good to very good. typical angle is apx. 24 inclusive, but it does vary. Now to sharpening, I love the Edge Pro, and keep some of my hard use EDC's at 320 grit. Never used a Lansky, did own a Sharpmaker, but never got the edge I needed. Instead I use a length of horsehide, say 14" X 3" for maintenance. Hope that helps, and again...

These day's I use either the Sharpmaker or DMT Aligner Pro-Kit. Both are pretty straight forward and easy to use.

Thanks guys. That youtube was educational.
I took apart my knife and noticed the area on the blade where the washers rest has 3 holes. Perhaps to hold just enough oil?? For those of you who have taken it apart, do you have three holes on each side? I have three on one side and the looks of what was once three on the other side. However one of the smaller holes has recessede to the biggest hole?? I'm wondering if my knife is damaged?

My Lansky and Sharpmaker have been put away with the purchase of the Worksharp guided field system. Great all around and versatile package. Along with with upgrade pack, it's still below $100 and is a value in my mind.

The holes are there to distinguish blade steels during heat treat and production. A great number of BM's have them and the location and number of holes differs between steels.

I use the Gatco sharpening system much like the Lansky, i put a serious chip in my mini ritter the other day and in a half hour I had the blade back to normal.

I use a Sharpmaker for all my touch-ups. I do have Wicked Edge that I use for knives that need serious work but my two mini-grips have a good enough edge profile that all they need is a touch-up at 40 degrees (inclusive) on the Sharpmaker.

I use my Wicked Edge for sharpening all my knives. Seems I never have to go lower than the 600 grit to start. I typically finish with 1200 and 1600 grit stones. Sometimes but not always I strop while the knives is still clamped in the WE.

Sharpmaker for daily touch-ups at 20dps. I do have one mini-Ritter that I had to reprofile with my Wicked Edge but typically the Sharpmaker is fine.

I have used a SharpMaker for over 20yrs
on all my folding knives.

A strop for light touch up.
